Abstract: A 6-axis robot performs autonomous complex assembly based on a task-independent approach by directing a robotic member on a first approach trajectory for placement of a grasped object, and determining that placement along the first trajectory is blocked. The robotic member has an end-effector at a distal end configured for compressively grasping the object. Blockage is determined by force and torque sensing encountered by the end effector prior to attaining an intended pose or position. The robot identifies a second, alternate approach trajectory for placement of the grasped object based on a probability of success of the second approach trajectory, resulting from considering probabilities of candidate trajectories or positions. The robotic member continues iterative placement based on successive, alternate trajectories until placement is achieved. The robot attempts a successive placement around localized positions/trajectories in response to increased probabilities and decreased distance/error from the desired pose.

Abstract: A delayed release device for a buoy engaged with an underwater lobster trap operates with a first magnet securing a buoy, such that the buoy is tethered to a deployed lobster trap submerged in lobster harvesting regions of the ocean. A second magnet secures the first magnet based on a magnetic field, and a displacement actuator is in communication with the second magnet for retracting the magnet in response to a predetermined condition. Based on the condition, such as a time delay, the actuator moves the second magnet distal from the first magnet for releasing the buoy when the distance reduces the magnetic field sufficiently. The actuator may include a drive screw having a threaded engagement with the second magnet, such that the drive screw is responsive to rotation for retracting the second magnet.

Abstract: An impact absorbing ski binding interface device includes an elongated top plate having a toe end and a heel end adapted to engage a boot toe and a boot heel, respectively, and a bottom plate adapted to engage a ski, thereby securing the device between the boot and ski. A plurality of constant force spring linkages between the top plate and the bottom plate include a constant force spring linkage between the toe end and the bottom plate, and a constant force spring linkage between the heel end and the bottom plate, such that each of the constant force spring linkages have an opposed pair of deformable members for exerting a counterforce to vertical displacement forces between the top plate and the bottom plate for load mitigation.

Abstract: A robotically driven OCT scanning and imaging system provides a 3-dimensional (3D) image rendering based on a 2-dimensional (2D) surface traversal of a Region of Interest (ROI) for immediate depiction of tissue health with an accuracy and portability not available with conventional imaging approaches. A comprehensive scan over the surface of the ROI ensures complete coverage, and a signal indicative of attenuation of the optical scan indicates penetration of the OCT stimulus. The received signal for each location is aggregated, or “stitched” together with the signal received from adjacent locations to provide a full mapping of the scanned region, and rendered as a color or shading map for showing anomalies or sudden variances in tissue health.

Abstract: Cathode material from exhausted lithium ion batteries are dissolved in a solution for extracting the useful elements Co (cobalt), Ni (nickel), Al (Aluminum) and Mn (manganese) to produce active cathode materials for new batteries. The solution includes compounds of desirable materials such as cobalt, nickel, aluminum and manganese dissolved as compounds from the exhausted cathode material of spent cells. Depending on a desired proportion, or ratio, of the desired materials, raw materials are added to the solution to achieve the desired ratio of the commingled compounds for the recycled cathode material for new cells. The desired materials precipitate out of solution without extensive heating or separation of the desired materials into individual compounds or elements. The resulting active cathode material has the predetermined ratio for use in new cells, and avoids high heat typically required to separate the useful elements because the desired materials remain commingled in solution.

Abstract: Described are a micro punch cutting tool and associated method that can be used under a microscope to accurately excise a targeted piece of material on a micron or millimeter scale. An example device for targeted material excision from a tissue sample includes a support defining an opening and providing a region below the opening for positioning a tissue sample. A tissue stabilizer is receivable in the opening and defines a shape that complements a shape of the support. A cutting tool assembly receivable in the tissue stabilizer includes a hollow cutter having a bore and is movable relative to the tissue stabilizer to cause the cutter to excise material from the tissue sample when the tissue sample is positioned below the opening of the support. Movement of the cutting tool assembly is guided by a helical groove in the tissue stabilizer engaging a protrusion of the cutting tool assembly.
