Abstract:
A system and method are provided for translating local IP addresses to globally unique IP addresses. This allows local hosts in an enterprise network to share global IP addresses from a limited pool of such addresses available to the enterprise. The translation is accomplished by replacing the source address in headers on packets destined for the Internet and by replacing destination address in headers on packets entering the local enterprise network from the Internet. Packets arriving from the Internet are screened by an adaptive security algorithm. According to this algorithm, packets are dropped and logged unless they are deemed nonthreatening. DNS packets and certain types of ICMP packets are allowed to enter local network. In addition, FTP data packets are allowed to enter the local network, but only after it has been established that their destination on the local network initiated an FTP session.
Abstract:
A module includes a module body adapted to plug into a mating port, and a latch member attached to the module body. The latch member is immovable relative to the module body when attached to the module body. The latch member is essentially always engaged with a receiving member of the mating port when the module body is plugged into the mating port, which always hinders a removal of the module body from the mating port.
Abstract:
A network connection device having internal circuitry capable of wiring correctly to a network cable is described. The network connection device includes an interface circuit, a switching array and a controlling circuit. First, the network connection device is physically connected to the network cable. Next, the positive and negative receiving terminals in the interface circuit are connected to a pair of signal carrying wires through the device's internal circuitry. Depending on the returned preamble field, the connections to the signal-carrying wires are judged to be either incorrect, in which case the connection has to be swapped through device's internal circuitry, or correct, in which case no swapping is required. Subsequently, the positive and negative transmission terminals are connected to a second pair of wires inside the network cable. Next, a data packet is sent out through the transmission terminal. According to the acknowledgement packed returned, the connections to the second pair of wires are judge to be either incorrect, in which case the connection has to be swapped through device's internal circuitry, or correct, in which case no swapping is required.
Abstract:
A repeater, useable for connecting switches in a data communication network, is provided in a distributed and/or modular fashion. The repeater includes a plurality of separate and distinct components or modules connected to or at least partially housed in, the various switches which the repeater modules couple. Preferably, the repeater autodetects and/or autoconfigures some or all aspects of repeater operations, such as detecting and/or configuring in response to appropriate or approved cable-type connections. A conductive, sealing member on a cable connector substantially reduces or eliminates EMI.
Abstract:
An embodiment is a telecommunication outlet mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) including a vertical shield extension and an inner shield extension which protrude downwards beyond the PCB. The vertical shield extension and the inner shield extension form a cross structure protruding downwards beyond the PCB, in which the cross structure defines four shielded quadrants each for housing contact tails of a tip and ring pair protruding downwards beyond the PCB. Shielding contact tails from each other with the extensions of the cross structure provides enhanced shielding and reduces crosstalk.
Abstract:
A repeater, useable for connecting switches in a data communication network, is provided in a distributed and/or modular fashion. The repeater includes a plurality of separate and distinct components or modules connected to or at least partially housed in, the various switches which the repeater modules couple. The distributed and/or modular repeater facilitates accommodating various switching or repeater needs as a network grows or contracts. A light pipe, preferably integral with a module case, conveys indicator lights to a position visible when viewing a switch front panel. A heat spreader unit receives and/or conveys heat and/or protects against undue EMI. A collision-handling state machine transmits modified collision fragments so as to avoid reduction in interpacket gaps, e.g. by downstream repeater modules.
Abstract:
A multi-port modular jack including an outer housing part, inner housing parts arranged in the outer housing part to define plug-receiving receptacles receivable of mating plugs, and an optional shield surrounding the jack. The outer housing part having a top wall, a bottom wall and a front face having a mid-portion arranged substantially parallel to and between the top and bottom walls. The front face defines a first row of apertures between the mid-portion and the top wall and a second row of apertures between the mid-portion and the bottom wall. Each aperture in the first row has a plane of symmetry offset in relation to a plane of symmetry of each aperture in the second row such that only a portion of each aperture in the first row is directly opposite the opposed apertures in the second row. Vents are formed in the outer housing part to allow for the passage of air through the jack. The inner housing parts are arranged in the outer housing part to define the plug-receiving receptacles in alignment with a respective aperture in the front face of the outer housing part. Each inner housing part includes contact/terminal members for engaging contacts of a plug insertable into a respective plug-receiving receptacle. The contact/terminal members forming one or more wire pairs may be provided with a double cross over to reduce near-end crosstalk.
Abstract:
In a device (ADSL_MODEM2) having Ethernet interfacing capability and ATMForum interfacing capability, a single connector (ETH/ATMF_CON) with four pairs of pins (P1, P2, P3, P4) is provided. This connector (ETH/ATMF_CON) is able to interface with an Ethernet plug and to interface with an ATMForum plug.
Abstract:
An apparatus for grounding network cabling prior to insertion in a network device. The apparatus includes a cable connector receptor for receiving a standardized network cable connector. The apparatus also includes a current limiting device coupled to the cable connector receptor for reducing any electrical potential present on the cable. The current limiting device is coupled to electrical ground via a ground connector which provides a discharge path for any electrical potential present on the cable. In alternative embodiments, the apparatus can exist as a standalone device, as an integrated feature of a grounding wrist strap, or as an integrated feature of a computer system or network hub.
