    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for measuring a thickness of a coating on an moving object are provided. Light is directed toward the object at a predetermined location on the object such that a portion of the light interacts with the object. A 1D and/or 2D maximum intensities for at least one wavelength channel is captured that is produced by the portion of the light interacting with the object. A measured average intensity of the wavelength channel and/or intensities and their arithmetic derivatives of multi wavelength channel geometries is converted into 1D (averaged) and/or 2D thickness values. Based on these values an acceptability of the coating is evaluated and thickness calculated.

    Abstract: A method of forming latex composite polymer particles produces hydrolysis resistant, composite polymer particles that can be used in aqueous latex compositions. Each of the latex composite polymer particles includes a first phase comprising a vinyl ester oligomer or polymer; optionally, an intermediate phase; and at least one second phase comprising an acrylic oligomer or polymer, a styrene oligomer or polymer, an acrylic-styrene copolymer, or mixtures thereof. The second phase and/or the intermediate phase at least partially encapsulates the first phase. The intermediate and second phases are more hydrophobic than the first phase. Optionally, the first phase, the second phase, and/or the intermediate phase may further comprise a cross-linking agent.

    Abstract: Compounds comprising one or more functionalized fatty acid esters, which may be derived from bio-based oils, are used as a low-VOC coalescent agent (i.e., a coalescent agent having a low content of volatile organic compounds) in waterborne coating compositions. The functional group can be epoxide, vicinal diol, hydroxy phosphotriester, hydroxy ester, hydroxyl alkyl ester, hydroxyl benzyl ester, hydroxy ether, hydroxy amino, hydroxy sulfide, hydroxy nitrile, hydroxy amine, terminal alcohol, thiiran, ketone, or cyclic carbonate. The present disclosure also relates to waterborne coating compositions comprising these functionalized fatty acid esters.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a dry free-flowing composite of a sub-micron polymer binder particles and interactive materials, and articles formed therefrom. The polymer particles are formed from a dilute latex polymer and blended with interactive materials, then the blend is spray-dried, to form a dry blend in which less than 10% of all polymer particles are in an agglomerated form. The polymer is preferably a polyvinylidene fluoride, such as Kyblock® PVDF from Arkema. The dry blend will be used to form articles and coatings by many means, for example forming a three dimensional article by heat and pressure, it can be redispersed into an aqueous coating composition, or can be electro-coated onto a substrate.

    Abstract: A method of incorporating a peroxide source that produces reactive oxygen species and optionally also incorporating steam with the peroxide source (or other source of heat), into soil as a method of soil remediation, i.e., to destroy or remove chemical contaminants that pose a threat to plant or animal life. The invention also relates to the use of the peroxide source along with optional steam (or other heat source) or hot vaporized peroxide solution to treat soils, in particular those intended for agriculture, as a pesticide for controlling nematodes, pathogenic fungi, insect pests and bacteria. The peroxide source may be applied to the soil using soil cultivation equipment to increase contact between the peroxide source and the soil to be treated. The peroxide source and/or steam or other source of heat or hot vaporized peroxide solution can also be applied with injection wells or infiltration galleries, for instance, for the pesticide use and soil remediation.

An image having at least two wavelength channels (e.g., color channels) is captured that is produced by the portion of the light interacting with the object. A relative shift is determined between each of the at least two wavelength channels, based on a histogram of each wavelength channel of the at least two wavelength channels. At least one of the thickness or an acceptability of the coating on the object is determined based on the determined relative shift.
