    摘要: A stepped main pole for a perpendicular write head and methods of making the stepped main pole. The stepped main pole has a main pole tip and a base portion. The main pole tip has a surface that forms part of the ABS and a first thickness. The base portion extends from the main pole tip and has a thickness that varies from the first thickness to a second thickness to form a slanted surface with an apex angle adjacent the main pole tip. By placing the base portion away from the ABS and providing a thickness that increases in a direction away from the ABS, the stepped pole can provide the necessary magnetic flux for writing, while avoiding undesired leakage and fringing. To form embodiments of the stepped main pole of the invention, a fluorine-based reactive ion etch (RIE) may be used. By using an RIE to define the stepped main pole, the apex angle can be better controlled and tight edge control can be achieved.

    摘要: A method for constructing a magnetic write head using an electrical lapping guide to carefully control critical dimensions during a lapping operation used to define an air bearing surface. The lapping guide is photolithograhically patterned in a common photolithographic step with another write head structure so that special relation between the lapping guide and critical dimensions of the write head structure can be carefully maintained. The electrical lapping guide can be patterned in a common photolithographic step as the write pole so that the location of the flare point can be carefully controlled with respect to the location of the lapping guide. A stitched flare structure can also be built together with the electrical lapping guide, then a self-aligned shield can be further built over this stitched flare structure so that both flare point and shield throat can be controlled tightly together by this electrical lapping guide during lapping process.

The method includes depositing a first layer of magnetic material over a substrate. A CMP stop layer, image transfer layer and mask structure are deposited over the first magnetic layer, the mask structure being formed with an edge located a desired distance from an air bearing surface plane. An ion milling operation is performed to remove portions of the magnetic layer that are not protected by the mask structure, the ion milling being performed in a manner to form a tapered surface on the first magnetic layer. Then, a second magnetic layer is deposited over the first magnetic layer to form a tapered magnetic write pole.

    摘要: A method for constructing a magnetic write head for use in perpendicular magnetic recording, the write head having a write pole with a trailing shield. After forming a magnetic write pole such as by masking and ion milling a magnetic write pole layer, a thin layer of alumina is deposited. This is followed by the deposition of a thin layer of Rh. Then, a thick layer of alumina is deposited, having a thickness that is preferably at least equal to the height of the write pole layer. A chemical mechanical polish is then performed until a portion of the Rh layer over the top (trailing edge) of the write pole is exposed. A material removal process such as ion milling is then performed to remove the exposed Rh layer exposing the thin alumina layer there beneath. The exposed thin alumina layer over the trailing edge of the write pole can then either be removed or left intact to form a portion of a trailing shield gap layer. Another Rh layer can then be deposited to provide a non-magnetic trailing shield gap. A magnetic material is then deposited to form the trailing shield. Since the Rh trailing gap layer is electrically conductive it can also serve as a seed layer for electroplating the magnetic trailing shield.
