A technique includes obtaining particle motion data and pressure data that are acquired by seismic sensors while in tow. The sensors are part of a plurality of streamers, and the pressure and particle motion data contain surface ghosts. The technique includes processing the particle motion data and the pressure data to generate a data set that is indicative of a pressure wavefield at positions between the streamers and is substantially free of the surface ghosts.

A method includes recording a first set of data using a first type of sensor; recording a second set of data using a second type of sensor, the first and second sets of data being contemporaneously acquired by co-located sensors; and removing noise from the first data set using the second data set. An apparatus includes a survey vessel towing an array of towed streamers including a plurality of paired, co-located sensors densely distributed along the streamers. A first one of each sensor pair is of a first type and a second one of each sensor pair is of a second type. A computing apparatus records a first set of data acquire by the first type of sensor and a second data set acquire by the second type of sensor. The computing apparatus then removes noise from the first data set using the second data set.

A method of acquiring or processing multi-component seismic data obtained from seismic signals propagating in a medium, the method comprising the steps of: selecting a first portion of the seismic data in which the first arrival contains only upwardly propagating seismic energy above the seafloor; and determining a first calibration filter from the first portion of the seismic data, the first calibration filter being to calibrate a first component of the seismic data relative to a second component of the seismic data.

A method of processing seismic data that includes including first and second modes of seismic energy where the second mode has been generated by partial mode conversion of the first mode at a boundary face of a layer of the seabed includes the step of cross-correlating a trace acquired at a receiver and including events corresponding to the first mode with a trace acquired at the same receiver and including events corresponding to the second mode. An event in the cross-correlated data that corresponds to partial mode conversion is identified, and the amplitude of this event is normalized, for example relative to the amplitude of the peak in the cross-correlogram at zero time delay. Information about the effects of the static shift produced by the layer and/or about vector infidelity can be arrived from normalized cross-correlograms for receivers in a receiver array.

A method includes conditioning a set of multicomponent seismic data and sensor orientation data, the multicomponent seismic data including pressure data and particle motion data, acquired in a towed array, marine seismic survey; digital group forming the conditioned pressure data, a vertical particle motion component of the conditioned particle motion data, and the conditioned sensor orientation data; and summing the digitally group formed pressure data and the digitally group formed vertical particle motion component.

The method presented accounts for three-dimensional effects when deghosting marine seismic data. The method relies on having second-order spatial derivatives in the cross-line direction available. The second-order cross-line derivative can be estimated directly or through indirect measurements of other wavefield quantities and by using wave-equation techniques to compute the desired term. The method preferably employs either a multicomponent streamer towed in the vicinity of the sea surface, a twin-streamer configuration near the sea-surface, or a configuration of three streamers that are separated either vertically or horizontally to estimate the second-order vertical derivative of pressure.

A method and apparatus implementing a technique for mitigating noise in seismic data are presented. The technique includes estimating a noise component in a set of multicomponent seismic data representing a recorded wavefield from the relationship at the free surface of an upgoing component and a downgoing component decomposed from the recorded wavefield; and removing the estimated noise component from the seismic data. The noise component can be estimated by decomposing a recorded wavefield into an upgoing component and a downgoing component and isolating a noise component in the recorded wavefield from the relationship of the decomposed upgoing and downgoing components at the free surface.

A technique includes obtaining first data indicative of seismic measurements acquired by seismic sensors of a first set of towed streamers and obtaining second data indicative of seismic measurements acquired by seismic sensors of a second set of towed streamers. The second set of towed streamers is towed at a deeper depth than the first set of towed streamers. The technique includes interpolating seismic measurements based on the first and second data. The interpolation includes assigning more weight to the second data than to the first data for lower frequencies of the interpolated seismic measurements.
