    Abstract: Systems and method that restore application data stored by a virtual machine database for an application (e.g., SQL, SharePoint, Exchange, and so on) running on the virtual machine are described. The systems and methods create an integrated snapshot of the application data stored in the virtual machine database, by creating a secondary copy of the application data stored in the virtual machine database, performing, via a virtual server agent (VSA), a software snapshot of the virtual machine, and performing, via the virtual server agent, a hardware snapshot of the software snapshot of the virtual machine.

    Abstract: A system according to certain aspects may include a client computing device including: a database application configured to output a database file in a primary storage device(s), the database application outputting the database file as a series of application-level blocks; and a data agent configured to divide the database file into a plurality of first blocks having a first granularity larger than a second granularity of the application-level blocks such that each of the first blocks spans a plurality of the application-level blocks. The system may include a secondary storage controller computer(s) configured to: in response to instructions to create a secondary copy of the database file: copy the plurality of first blocks to a secondary storage device(s) to create a secondary copy of the database file; and create a table that provides a mapping between the copied plurality of first blocks and corresponding locations on the secondary storage device(s).

    Abstract: According to certain aspects, systems and methods for archiving and/or backing up PST files or other mail or calendar data, or the like (“off-line mail data”) are provided. Off-line mail data can be searched for in a client computer system, a copy of which may be transferred to secondary storage. Further, emails, contacts, calendar data, and/or the like (e.g., Microsoft Outlook data) contained in the transferred off-line mail data may be extracted, wherein it is determined whether copies of the data already exist backup data. Off-line mail data that already exists in backup can be deleted from the PST file. Following back-up of the off-line mail data, the backed up file may be deleted from the client system and/or the creation of future off-line mail files may be disabled.

    Abstract: Rather than relying on pre-defined scheduling of secondary copy operations such as backup jobs, the illustrative opportunistic approach initiates secondary copy operations based on changing operational conditions in a storage management system. An adaptive backup readiness score is based on a number of backup-readiness operational factors. An illustrative enhanced data agent which is associated with the target database application (or other executable component) may monitor the operational factors and determine the backup readiness score based on weights assigned to the respective operational factors. The enhanced data agent may evaluate recent backup jobs to determine which of the operational factors that contributed to the backup readiness score may have been most relevant. Based on the most-relevant analysis, the enhanced data agent may adapt the weights assigned to the monitored operational factors, so that the backup readiness score may be more suitable and responsive to ongoing operational conditions in the system.

    Abstract: An information management system according to certain aspects may be configured to generate a snapshot of data relating to a plurality of applications. The system may include a plurality of data agents, wherein each data agent is associated with at least one of a plurality of applications, and data generated by the plurality of applications is stored in a logical volume in primary storage. The system may also include a snapshot manager configured to detect the plurality of applications; check with the plurality of data agents whether the associated applications are in consistent states; obtain a snapshot of the logical volume in response to receiving notifications from the plurality of data agents that the associated applications are in consistent states; and generate mapping information between a particular one of the plurality of applications and a portion of the snapshot relating to the particular one of the plurality of applications.

    Abstract: An information management system according to certain aspects is provided to perform archiving based on third-party application rules and third-party metadata. The system may include a third-party archiving data agent that can access archiving rules and/or metadata of a third-party application. The third-party archiving data agent may be a data agent that can access archiving rules and/or metadata of a third-party application, and can include or be in the form of a plug-in for a particular third-party application. The third-party archiving data agent can decide whether to archive a file associated with a third-party application by checking the third-party metadata associated with the file and determining whether the metadata meets the third-party archiving rules. The system can perform the archiving on behalf of the third-party application, and in certain embodiments, notify the third-party application that the archiving has been completed.
