Abstract: This invention flexibly controls the number of user planes in a communication system. In a communication system, a base station is in a local area network and at least one user plane function arranged in a cloud are connected. A determination is made as to whether or not a new user plane function should be added, taking into consideration: the traffic amount, from the maximum traffic amount using the local area network, of user data transferred by the at least one user plane function using the local area network; and an anticipated traffic amount of a new user plane function.

Abstract: Embodiments are directed towards systems and methods for enabling a telecommunication service provider to control an underlay network in cloud service provider environment. Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for improving telecommunications services by intelligently deploying radio access network components and redundant links within a data center hierarchy to satisfy latency, power, availability, and quality of service requirements for one or more network slices are described. The radio access network components may include virtualized distributed units (VDUs) and virtualized centralized units (VCUs). To satisfy a latency requirement for a network slice, various components of a radio access network may need to be redeployed closer to user equipment. To satisfy a power requirement for the network slice, various components of the radio access network may need to be redeployed closer to core network components. Over time, the components of the radio access network may be dynamically reassigned to different layers within a data center hierarchy in order to satisfy changing latency requirements and power requirements for the network slice.

In one example, a method includes: selecting a first network slice and a second network slice both pertaining to a common data network, designating a first traffic flow to the first network slice and a second traffic flow to the second network slice, generating a first network slice profile including a first network identifier and first mapping information, generating a second network slice profile including a second network identifier and second mapping information, assigning the first network slice profile to the first traffic flow and the second network slice profile to the second traffic flow, and separating the first traffic flow from the second traffic flow on a user plane function (UPF) instance, based on the assigned first network slice profile and the second network slice profile.
