Abstract:
Disclosed is a coating for inhibiting the formation of scales on one or more surfaces of a component used in the production of subsurface fluids. The coating comprises a diamond-like carbon structure doped with a dopant, such as silicon, titanium, fluorine, oxygen, or chromium. The dopant comprises between about 10% and about 40% of the coating by atom.
Abstract:
Techniques to prioritize and optimize the execution of upgrade operations are described. A technique may include determining the size of data blocks that are to be copied from one storage medium to another, and the dependencies of upgrade tasks on the data blocks and on other tasks. A task may be prioritized according to a weight that includes the cumulative sizes of the data blocks that it and its dependent tasks depend on. A data block copying may be prioritized according to the cumulative weights of the tasks that depend on that data block. Some embodiments may perform several data copying and/or tasks in parallel, rather than sequentially. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract:
A brake control valve includes a housing, a quick braking chamber and a piston subject to brake pipe pressure on one side of the piston. A bore in the housing connects the quick braking chamber at a first end and the one side of the piston at a second end. A first valve is in the housing at the first end of the bore. A first operator is in the bore for opening the first valve for a range of positions of the piston. The bore has a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter larger than the first diameter. The first bore portion connects the one side of the piston to the second bore portion. A first operator in the bore is connected to the piston. A seal on the first operator is dimensioned to form a seal with the first bore portion and not with the second bore portion. The seal is located on the operator to lie in the first bore portion for a first segment of the range of piston positions and to lie in the second bore portion for a second segment of the range of piston positions.

Abstract:
A method for determining a property of a layered structure includes receiving information defining a characteristic angle for a structure. The characteristic angle is such that, after performance of a process that changes a thickness of a first layer adjacent a second layer of the structure, light reflected from a beam that impinges at the characteristic angle on an interface that will be formed adjacent the second layer has predominantly a first polarization. After receiving the information and during the process, a light beam is directed onto the structure at the characteristic angle. The light beam includes at least a first component having the first polarization and a second component having a second polarization. Light that the structure reflects from the light beam is detected. A signal is generated upon detecting that a proportion of the reflected light that has the first polarization undergoes a change meeting a predefined criterion.
Abstract:
The present empty/load device includes an inlet to receive a brake signal, an outlet for a brake device, load sensing element, a change over valve responsive to the load sensing element to proportion the pressure at the inlet and the outlet when empty is sensed by the load sensing element, a differential pressure element connecting the load sensing element and the change over valve, and a lock-out mechanism to prevent proportioning of the inlet pressure to the outlet when activated. The lock-out mechanism includes a lock-out valve, in a lock-out position, pneumatically preventing proportioning of the inlet pressure to the outlet. A first spring biases the lock-out valve from the lock-out position. A detent engages the lock-out valve and holding the lock-out valve in the lock-out position. The lock-out valve may be connected in parallel to the change over valve with respect to the inlet and the outlet. Alternatively, the lock-out valve may be connected in parallel to the both sides of the differential pressure element.
Abstract:
A gene that is a positive mediator of tumor growth and metastasis in certain cancer types is provided. This gene and corresponding polypeptide have diagnostic and therapeutic application for detecting and treating cancers that involve expression of SCC-S2 such as renal, ovarian, head and neck, breast, prostate, brain, chronic myelogenous leukemia, lung, lymphoblastic leukemia, and colorectal adenocarcinoma cells.
Abstract:
A system for continuous and real-time detection of skidding conditions in a rolling mill in which continuous monitoring of conditions which could lead to skidding and analysis of the monitored conditions is effected and wherein an alarm signal is produced when conditions exceed a threshold and indicate skidding. The system provides for immediate correction of skidding conditions to safeguard the machinery and mill equipment against damage.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a Mycobacterium tuberculosis specific DNA fragment containing IS like and repetitive sequences, a method of production of such DNA fragment and the use of such DNA fragment, for example, to rapidly diagnose Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in clinical samples, and to identify clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The DNA fragment may be used to determine information about the epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
