摘要： Apparatus for opening an envelope having a front panel, a back panel and a closing flap. The apparatus includes: a device for supporting the envelope in a substantially horizontal plane wherein the back panel is situated above the front panel; a device for holding the closing flap below the back panel; an opening horn for separating the back panel from the front panel, the opening horn being pivotable in a vertical plane; and a device for causing the horn to initially contact the closing flap and to pivot the horn into the envelope between the front and back panels, and to raise the horn inside the envelope, whereby the front and back panels are separated.

摘要： A method for sequencing the exiting of a cut tape segment from a tape roll feeding, cutting and ejecting apparatus of a mailing machine having a tape roll drive and cut tape segment ejection device and in which a cut tape segment from the tape roll is ejected in an opposite direction from the feeding direction of the feeding of tape of the tape roll drive as it feeds the tape for printing includes the steps of feeding the tape in the feeding direction for a first predetermined time period for extending a predetermined length of tape, further feeding the tape in the feeding direction to create a trail edge margin to assure that the tape is not cut shorter than a minimum length, printing on the tape; then feeding the tape in the opposite direction until one of a first and second conditions occurs, the first condition being the sensing of a leading edge of the tape by a sensor and the second condition being feeding the tape in the opposite direction beyond a second predetermined time period, then at times when the first condition occurs cutting the tape with a cutting apparatus to create the cut tape segment and subsequently ejecting the tape segment from the roll tape feeding, cutting and ejecting apparatus, and at times when the second condition occurs feeding the tape in the tape feed direction to alleviate a tape jam condition.

摘要： In a mailing machine including a postage meter, wherein the postage meter includes rotary printing structure for printing indicia on a sheet fed to the machine, and the machine includes apparatus for driving the printing structure, wherein the driving apparatus includes a drive gear, the driving apparatus includes a locking member movable into and out of locking engagement with the drive gear, the driving apparatus includes an actuating member for moving the locking member, and wherein the machine includes trip structure for sensing a sheet fed to the machine, an improvement comprising: a source of supply of d.c. power; a first circuit connected across the power supply and including a solenoid and a trip switch actuatable for energizing the solenoid; a second circuit connected across the power supply and including a d.c. motor and a motor switch actuatable for energizing and deenergizing the motor; and the trip switch actuated in response to the trip structure sensing a sheet fed to the machine, and the driving apparatus causing the actuating member to move the locking member out of locking engagement with the drive gear and actuate the motor switch for energizing the motor to drive the drive gear when the solenoid is energized.

摘要： In a mailing machine including a postage meter and a housing for supporting the postage meter, wherein the mailing machine includes means for individually feeding sheets in a path of travel through the machine, wherein the postage meter includes rotary means for printing indicia on the sheets; and wherein the postage meter includes a roller spaced downstream in the path of travel from the rotary printing means, an improvement in the sheet feeding means, the improvement comprising: an impression roller and a shaft on which the impression roller is mounted for rotation therewith; an ejection roller and a shaft on which the ejection roller is mounted for rotation therewith; an elongate carriage including a pair of side walls spaced apart from each other, one end of each of the side walls including an arcuately-shaped portion pivotally attaching the carriage to the housing and forming a generally C-shaped bearing bushing; the ejection roller shaft rotatably mounted with the bearing bushings for supporting the ejection roller beneath the postage meter roller; the impression roller rotatably connected to the carriage side walls for supporting the impression roller beneath the rotary printing means; means for rotating the ejection roller shaft and the impression roller; and a spring connecting the other end of the carriage to the housing to permit the carriage to pivot downwardly about the ejection roller shaft against the force exerted by the spring as the ejection roller shaft rotates within the bearing bushings, thereby permitting mixed thickness sheets to be individually fed between the rotary printing means and impression roller.

摘要： In a mailing machine including a postage meter, wherein the postge meter includes rotary structure for printing indicia on a sheet fed to the machine, wherein the machine includes apparatus for driving the printing structure, wherein the machine includes apparatus for feeding a sheet fed thereto downstream in a path of travel through the machine, wherein the sheet feeding apparatus includes an impression roller rotatably mounted beneath the rotary printing structure, and wherein the impression roller has an inner end and an outer end, an improvement comprising: apparatus for aligning a sheet fed to the machine with the path of travel, the aligning apparatus including a registration fence aligned with the path of travel, the aligning apparatus including an elongate stop lever and a shaft on which the lever is pivotally mounted outboard of the outer end of the impression roller, the stop lever extending into the path of travel for pivoting a sheet fed thereto toward the registration fence, the aligning apparatus including a cam rotatable with the printing structure, the aligning apparatus including a cam follower secured to the shaft and disposed in engagement with the cam; and apparatus for starting operation of the driving apparatus in response to the sheet being fed to the machine, the driving apparatus rotating the cam when the driving apparatus is started, the stop lever located relative to the starting apparatus for pivoting a sheet fed thereto before the driving apparatus is started, and the cam dimensioned for rotating the cam shaft for lowering the stop lever out of the path of travel after the driving apparatus is started.
