摘要： A system and method is provided for monitoring a plurality of audio sources and switching from one to another of the audio sources in accordance with a stored program. An audio output device receives a signal from each of the portable electronic devices and selectively switches the contents of its output according to at least one preprogrammed user preference. The audio output device also automatically communicates with transceiver modules connected to local information systems, for example within a vehicle, office or shopping center. Based on programs stored in a storage device connected to the headset, the local information sources may be monitored and selected to interrupt other audio sources received by the headset when desired.

摘要： A voice messaging system includes an input device to accept a destination electronic messaging address, a voice-to-text converter to convert or transcribe a received voice message into a converted text message, and a processor to operate an electronic messaging program and to prepare the text message for automatic electronic transmission to the destination electronic messaging address. A method is also provided to convert a voice message into a text message and to transmit the same to a destination electronic messaging address. The method includes inputting a destination electronic messaging address. A received voice message is converted or transcribed into a text message and prepared as a text file. The prepared text file is automatically transmitted to the destination electronic messaging address. A log file including the text of the voice messages may be maintained with updates at a predetermined time interval. A database of the converted text messages may be generated and maintained to provide a searchable mechanism of archived messages.

The automatic restriction of access to a wireless network (e.g., a wireless local area network (LAN) such as a piconet network) by requiring a wireless network device to provide earth coordinates (e.g., GPS location information) as part of an establishment or maintenance of a connection to a wireless network, independent of a range of communication of any device in the wireless network. A wireless piconet network device outside of predetermined earth coordinates of a secured area (e.g., a building, a room in a building, a desk in a room in a building, etc.) may be denied access to resources on the wireless network, and/or required to provide additional authorization information so as to confirm authorized secured status of the entering wireless device.

摘要： A method and system for updating information stored in portable electronic devices based on the geographic location of the electronic devices is disclosed. The portable electronic devices are provided with built-in transceiver modules which will automatically communicate with base stations provided at centralized high traffic locations. The base stations transmit low power radio signals to the portable devices that contain commands for the devices to automatically update information stored in the portable devices based on the geographic area, such as for example updating to a new telephone area code or time zone. Additionally, a global positioning satellite (GPS) system can be utilized to automatically set the transceiver modules in the portable electronic devices to the proper frequency at which the base stations are transmitting thereby ensuring a communication link between the base station and the portable electronic device. Alternatively, a GPS system can be utilized to update information stored in the portable electronic devices based on the geographic location of the electronic devices.

The alternative receiver off-hook notification signal may be, e.g., an e-mail message sent to a preferred e-mail address, a paging message sent to a preferred pager number, a facsimile message sent to a preferred facsimile machine, and/or an audible message sent to a preferred alternative telephone. More than one alternative receiver off-hook notification device may be used, and are preferably prioritized such that as one notification device fails to rectify the off-hook condition, the next priority notification device will be utilized after a suitable delay. Thus, the user of the telephone system can receive notification of the off-hook condition of their telephone system even when not within an audible or visual distance of the telephone system.

摘要： A wireless piconet transceiver is mounted in a vehicle, and a complementary fixed wireless piconet transceiver is mounted in a garage, service station, police squad car, etc., for communication with the vehicle when parked adjacent thereto. The vehicle establishes a temporary piconet network with the user's home piconet. Vehicle operational statistics are tracked and maintained in a centralized vehicle computer database. This database can be manipulated to store the data desired by the vehicle owner. Via a wireless piconet connection, this database can transmitted to another piconet device such as the owner's computer. This computer system can be part of a wireless piconet, such as Bluetooth, This provides the computer with the ability to communicate with external wireless devices such as a cell phone, PDA, computer, or a cordless telephone. This invention allows for the configuration, or selection of desired vehicle data to be tracked. This configuration can take place on the owner's home computer (or laptop) and consequently transmitted to the vehicle computer using a wireless piconet protocol, e.g., the Bluetooth protocol. Additionally, this configuration can be manipulated by a direct interface to the vehicle provided by the manufacturer. Exemplary vehicle statistics which may be tracked include, but are not limited to, miles per gallon, average miles per hour, maximum MPH, miles driven per trip, driving statistics based on time of day and/or on identified driver, rotations of the engine per minute (RPM), temperature of engine, fuel gauge level, oil pressure, tires, brakes, engine coolant, wiper fluid, global positioning satellite (GPS) system, and/or even compressed voice from inside car cockpit during operation of vehicle.

摘要： A variable voice compression device and method in a voice messaging system is provided. The device includes a call related information/coding table or database which contains associations between call related information regarding desired calling parties, and selected coding techniques and effective data rates resulting in varying voice compression ratios. Upon receipt of an incoming call, call related information sent from the central office is compared to entries in the call related information/coding table or database. If a match is found, the subsequent voice message is encoded with a coding technique and effective data rate determined from the matching entry in the call related information/coding table or database. Otherwise, the voice message is encoded with a default coding technique and effective data rate.
