摘要: An ion guide or ion trap is disclosed having an entrance electrode and an exit electrode. The potential of the exit electrode is periodically dropped for a relatively short period of time allowing some ions to escape from the ion guide or ion trap via an aperture in the exit electrode. The period of time that the potential of the exit electrode is dropped for is progressively increased and ions emerge from the ion guide or ion trap in a mass to charge ratio dependent manner. The ion guide or ion trap may be operated as a mass separator or low resolution mass analyzer.

摘要: An ion-mobility analyser is disclosed comprising a plurality of axially segmented upper electrodes, a plurality of axially segmented lower electrodes, a first plurality of axially segmented intermediate electrodes and a second plurality of axially segmented intermediate electrodes which together define an ion pathway. An asymmetric voltage waveform is applied to the upper electrodes and a DC compensating voltage is applied to the lower electrodes in order to separate ions in a vertical radial direction according to their rate of change of ion mobility with electric field strength. At the same time, a DC axial voltage gradient is maintained along the axial length of the analyser in order to separate ions axially according to their ion mobility.

Ions are scanned out of the mass selective ion trap or mass analyser (4) and are received in one or more axial potential wells created or formed within the ion guide (6). One or more transient DC voltages or potentials are preferably applied to the ion guide (6) in order to create a plurality of axial potential wells which are translated along the length of the ion guide (6). Ions are released in packets from the exit of the ion guide (6) and are orthogonally accelerated into a drift or flight region of an orthogonal acceleration Time of Flight mass analyser (13) with a relatively high duty cycle.

摘要: A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising an ion guide. The ion guide comprises a hollow tubular conductor (1) having a wall. One or more electrodes are provided in the wall of the tubular conductor (1). An exit aperture (3) is provided in the wall of the tubular conductor (1) downstream of the one or more electrodes (2). An AC or RF voltage is applied to the one or more electrodes (2) and a DC potential difference is maintained between the wall of the tubular conductor (1) and the one or more electrodes (2). The combination of a DC voltage gradient and applying an AC or RF voltage to the electrodes (2) is that ions are confined radially to a region which is preferably close to the one or more electrodes (2). Ions are preferably extracted from the ion guide via the exit aperture (3) by maintaining a pressure gradient between the inside of the tubular conductor (1) and the outside of the tubular conductor (1) and/or by maintaining a DC electric field which acts to extract ions through the exit aperture (3).
