摘要: In a method for analyzing a microorganism using a matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometer, a matrix-and-additive mixture solution prepared by mixing one or both of an alkylphosphonic acid and a surfactant with a matrix substance is used for matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization. Either an alkylphosphonic acid or a surfactant, or both of them are used as matrix additives and are mixed with the matrix substance beforehand to prepare a matrix-and-additive mixture solution. After a solution which contains a microorganism to be analyzed has been dropped onto a sample plate, the matrix-and-additive mixture solution is dropped onto that solution and dried to form a mixed crystal which contains both the constituents of the microorganism and the matrix substance. This crystal is used as a sample for MALDI-MS analysis. The sensitivity of analysis is thereby improved, without increasing the amount of time and labor required for sample preparation.

摘要: An electrostatic trap such as an orbitrap is disclosed, with an electrode structure. An electrostatic trapping field of the form U′(r, ϕ, z) is generated to trap ions within the trap so that they undergo isochronous oscillations. The trapping field U′(r, ϕ, z) is the result of a perturbation W to an ideal field U(r, ϕ, z) which, for example, is hyperlogarithmic in the case of an orbitrap. The perturbation W may be introduced in various ways, such as by distorting the geometry of the trap so that it no longer follows an equipotential of the ideal field U(r, ϕ, z), or by adding a distortion field (either electric or magnetic). The magnitude of the perturbation is such that at least some of the trapped ions have an absolute phase spread of more than zero but less than 2π radians over an ion detection period Tm.

摘要: Systems and methods are provided for determining the organic silicon content of petroleum fractions, such as refinery fractions. This can be achieved in part based on performing solvent-enhanced selective filtration on a hydrocarbonaceous sample to substantially remove inorganic silicon from the sample while retaining at least a substantial portion of the organic silicon in the sample. After the solvent-enhanced selective filtration, the organic silicon content of the filtered sample can be determined. The ability to determine the organic silicon content of a sample can be used to identify crude fractions and/or refinery fractions that may cause contamination problems within a refinery while reducing or minimizing the occurrence of false positive tests that could result from detection of inorganic silicon.

摘要: Apparatus and methods for delivering biological samples to an ICP source of a mass cytometer are disclosed. Biological material is disposed on a plurality of discrete sites on a carrier. The plurality of discrete sites are configured to retain biological material and to release the biological material upon application of energy. The carrier is positioned in proximity to a gas conduit and upon release from the discrete sites, the biological material becomes entrained in a gas flow, which delivers discrete portions of biological material through the conduit to the ICP source for analysis by mass cytometry. The apparatus and methods can provide a continuous stream of discrete portions of biological material to a mass cytometer or mass spectrometer.
