摘要:
The present invention relates to a method and materials for producing digitally imaged short-run gravure printing plates and cylinders comprising the steps of providing an image-ready printing blank having a substrate, a UV curing layer, and an IR absorbing, UV-opaque layer. Alternatively, the blank plate can be provided in a two-part construction comprising the metallic substrate and an IR-sensitive film for either processless ablation or ablation transfer imaging Digital imaging of the blank plate is performed using an IR laser which causes selective ablation of areas of the upper IR absorbing layer, thus forming an image structure having exposed and unexposed areas on the underlying UV curing layer. The plate is then flood-cured with UV radiation and washed to better expose the hardened image structure areas of the UV curing layer which have formed and which provide the cells for holding printing ink for use in the gravure printing process.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a printing stencil and a method for its preparation. There is thus provided, In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a printing stencil comprising a porous stencil carrier layer, preferably of a non-woven tissue, which is impregnated with a solid or liquid radiation curable material. The printing stencil may further comprise a mask laid upon or integral to the stencil layer for defining areas transparent and areas non transparent to curing irradiation. There is thus also provided, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a method for the preparation of a printing stencil, said printing stencil comprising a stencil carrier layer and a stencil layer, which is impregnated with a radiation curable material. The method comprises the step of selectively irradiating the stencil layer with curing radiation, thereby forming ink permeable and ink impermeable areas, said ink permeable areas consisting of uncured material and said ink impermeable areas consisting of cured material. The method may further comprise the step of creating a mask on the stencil layer prior to irradiating it with curing radiation, for selectively blocking curing radiation by defining, on the printing stencil, areas exposed and areas unexposed to curing radiation. The printing stencil of the present invention may be used in stencil duplicating processes for printing fine details, graphic elements and color printing at a higher quality than existing stencils, approaching offset lithographic standards.

UV curable ink-jet inks for continuous ink-jet printing and drop on demand (DOD) ink-jet printing are provided which are preferably applied to substrates capable of absorbing part of an ink droplet applied thereupon. The ink compositions of the present invention include a mixture of water which serves as a solvent, a water miscible polymerizable material capable of being cured upon the application of UV light, a photoinitiator, and a colorant which may be a dye or a color pigment. The ink compositions may also include a bridging fluid.

A lithographic plate blank for imaging on a laser printer comprises a sheet of flexible electrically non-conductive material and an image receiving etchable layer coating bonded on a surface thereof, the coating including zinc oxide, a resin binder, and an electrical property regulating agent and being effective to provide the plate with a surface resistance of between 10.sup.11 and 10.sup.14 ohms per square and a dark decay rate of at least 15 volts per second. A method of preparation of a blank plate and a method of preparation of an imaged plate are disclosed.

A method of manufacturing a flexographic plate having a uniform thickness comprises providing a thermoset layer having at least one uneven side; providing a thermoplastic layer having a first and a second side; attaching the first side of the thermoplastic layer to the uneven side of the thermoset layer thereby forming a flexographic plate; and calendering the flexographic plate via a series of heated pairs of rollers thereby creating a flexographic plate with a uniform thickness.

A micro-lens enhanced element comprises a substrate bearing sequences of printed image elements, each sequence containing image elements from more than one image. A transparent spacer layer is coated over the interlaced image strips. Lenticular lenses are fashioned over each sequence of image elements by deposition of a transparent layer of low surface energy polydimethyl siloxane based material and ablation of the same to create strips of material abhesive to a polymeric lens forming material between consecutive sequences of printed image elements. During deposition of a liquid lens forming material, the liquid withdraws from the liquid abhesive low surface energy strips to form a meniscus, thereby providing lenticular lenses. The transparent low surface energy material comprises a near infrared dye with low absorption in the visible range of the spectrum to render the material both transparent and ablateable by infrared laser.

A color contrast image in imaged lithographic printing precursors can be obtained by contacting the imaged precursor with a coloration solution containing a colorless form of a photochromic compound. Residual amounts of this compound attached to the oleophilic surface of the imaged precursor can be changed to its colored form when exposed to UV light. The coloration solution can be an alkaline or acidic developer or an alkaline or acidic solution used separately after development. The coloration solution can also be a gum solution.

Laser-engraveable flexographic printing plate precursors have a laser-engraveable elastomeric layer that comprises a non-free radical crosslinked polymeric binder, an infrared radiation absorbing compound, and a compound that remains stable in the precursor but upon imaging thermally degrades to produce gaseous products. The thermally degradable compounds can generate or liberate one or more gases such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Single coatings onto non-absorbent substrates on which aqueous ink jet inks are jetted with subsequent application of heat, without the use of reactive species in the ink and in the media used as a substrate coating. The heating rapidly drives the water of the ink into the coating, with the rest of the water from the ink being lost by evaporation. The material is then subject to immediate application of a sealing lacquer, which is preferably water-based and which may be dried and possibly cross-linked by heat to give a very resistant surface.
