摘要: A method and apparatus for the variable rate coding of a speech signal. An input speech signal is classified and an appropriate coding mode is selected based on this classification. For each classification, the coding mode that achieves the lowest bit rate with an acceptable quality of speech reproduction is selected. Low average bit rates are achieved by only employing high fidelity modes (i.e., high bit rate, broadly applicable to different types of speech) during portions of the speech where this fidelity is required for acceptable output. Lower bit rate modes are used during portions of speech where these modes produce acceptable output. Input speech signal is classified into active and inactive regions. Active regions are further classified into voiced, unvoiced, and transient regions. Various coding modes are applied to active speech, depending upon the required level of fidelity. Coding modes may be utilized according to the strengths and weaknesses of each particular mode. The apparatus dynamically switches between these modes as the properties of the speech signal vary with time. And where appropriate, regions of speech are modeled as pseudo-random noise, resulting in a significantly lower bit rate. This coding is used in a dynamic fashion whenever unvoiced speech or background noise is detected.

摘要: A first remote vocoder receives analog voice and produces packetized vocoder data which is transmitted over a wireless link. A first local vocoder receives the packetized vocoder data from the wireless link. The first local vocoder converts the packetized data to a multibit PCM output. The first local vocoder also adds a detection code to one of the least significant bits (LSB) of the PCM output. The first local vocoder passes the PCM signal to the PSTN from the second end user. The first local vocoder also receives PCM input over the PSTN. The first local vocoder constantly monitors the least significant bit of the PCM input for a detection code indicating that a second local vocoder is connected at the receiving end. If the first local vocoder detects the detection code from the second local vocoder, it begins to substitute packetized data and a redundancy check for a second one of the LSB's of the outgoing PCM. The first local vocoder also begins to monitor the second one of the LSB's of the incoming PCM. If the redundancy check indicates that valid packetized data has been received, the first local vocoder stops converting the PCM output into packetized data and simply passes the packetized data on the second one of the LSB's to the first remote vocoder. If at any time the redundancy check fails and the detection code is not detected, the first local vocoder returns to converting the incoming PCM to packetized data. In this way, the tandem vocoding arrangement is avoided.

摘要: The present disclosure concerns embodiments of a stair tread which can be installed on a staircase. The stair tread has a metal core at least partially covered with high-strength concrete. In an exemplary embodiment, the core portion has first and second horizontally extending metal plates that are spaced apart vertically from each other, and a grid of vertically extending metal support walls positioned between the first and second metal plates. The core portion can also include retention elements extending upwardly from and distributed across the top of the upper plate for securing the concrete covering to the core.

摘要: An exemplary stair nosing assembly comprises an elongated base, a plate adhered to the base, and a cover temporarily covering the base and the plate. The base has at least one anchor portion extending downwardly from the upper portion for attaching to a lip of a tread pan and/or embedding in a concrete tread. The plate can have various features to enhance traction and visibility. The cover has front and rear lips that engage with front and rear edges of the base, and a weakened region adjacent the rear lip. When the assembly is embedded in a concrete tread, the cover is configured to fracture at the weakened region when the front lip of the cover is lifted upward from the base, leaving the rear lip remaining embedded in the concrete and allowing the rest of the cover to be removed to expose upper surfaces of the base and plate.

摘要: A pneumatically actuated clip for a paintball gun may include a driving member such as a soft sealing ball or a flexible drive piston that conforms in shape and size to a cross-sectional area of a passageway containing a supply of paintballs. The passageway preferably provides a paintball route (or pathway) inside the clip that supplies the paintballs to the paintball gun. In one embodiment, the driving member creates a pneumatic chamber (sealing as it moves) in the area behind the driving member. Pressurized gas supplied to the pneumatic chamber preferably drives the driving member and the supply of paintballs forward along the pathway. The pressurized gas that drives the driving member can, for instance, be controlled by means of an integrated regulator or can be a timed pulse of air supplied through a solenoid valve as controlled by a signal from a control board. The signal could be generated using a breech sensor to determine when a paintball has been loaded into the breech to determine when to actuate the supply solenoid. Alternatively, a pressure switch can control the supply of pressurized gas through a solenoid. Other features and embodiments are also disclosed.
