Abstract: A multi-layer preform for forming multi-layer containers includes an extruded inner barrier layer containing polyethylene naphthalate, said inner layer having an upper portion adapted to be formed into an upper portion of a container, an intermediate portion adapted to be formed into an intermediate portion of a container, an extruded and a base portion adapted to form a base portion of a container. The preform includes an outer injection molded layer. The inner layer has a thickness which differs from the base portion to the upper portion.

Abstract: A plastic blow molded container (10) is disclosed as including a freestanding base structure (20) that is constructed with a plurality of downwardly projecting hollow legs 22, a plurality of curved ribs (34) located between the legs, and a hub 41 from which the legs and ribs extend radially with a construction that provides good stability against tipping as well as the capability of withstanding internal pressure. Each leg (22) has a lower flat foot (24) coplanar with the other feet and the feet have an outer diameter D.sub.f that is at least 0.75 of the diameter D of the cylindrical body portion. Each flat foot (24) also has a junction (28) with an associated outer wall (26) of the foot and this junction has a radius of curvature R.sub.j less than 0.05 of the diameter D of the cylindrical body portion. A planar inner connecting portion (30) of each foot (22) is inclined and extends upwardly and inwardly to the hub (41) while side walls (32) of the legs are connected to the curved ribs (34) which each have a curved intermediate portion that extends between outer and inner ends (36,38) of the rib along a curved intermediate rib portion (40). On one embodiment the hub (41) has an upwardly extending shape; in another embodiment the hub (41') has a flat horizontally extending shape; and in a further embodiment the hub (41") has a downwardly extending shape. The specific construction disclosed of the legs (22), ribs (34) and hub (41, 41', 41") enhance the capability of the base structure in providing good stability as well as the capability of withstanding internal pressure.

Abstract: A plastic blow molded container (20) for holding liquids includes a rectangular body portion (22) having at least one rib (44,46) extending completely around the container and having a construction that facilitates assembly of a unitary valve (42) to a dispensing spout (40) while maintaining flatness of side walls of the container during use. Each rib (44,46) has curved rib portions (48) extending along a pair of longer side walls (28). Each rib also has a relatively shallow rib portion (50) adjacent one shorter side wall (30) to prevent excessive compression thereof as the unitary valve (42) is pressed onto the dispensing spout (40). Each rib also has a relatively deep rib portion (52) along another shorter side wall (32) to maintain its flatness with the container filled and supported on the one shorter side wall (30) for the liquid dispensing through the valve (42). A top closure (38) of the container in addition to including the dispensing spout (40) includes a central handle (70) and a vent hump (72) having a label surface (74) that is inclined at about forty-five degrees with a vent (76) at its lower extremity to facilitate the liquid dispensing by admitting air into the container.

Abstract: An in-mold label dispenser (10) for a plastic blow molding machine (12) is disclosed as including a base (24) on which label magazines (26) are mounted along with a subbase (34) which is moved by a first actuator (40) between aligned and transfer positions with respect to open mold sections (16) of the mold (14). A shuttle (42) of the dispenser has label carriers (44) thereon and is movable with the subbase movement as well as being movable toward and away from the mold (14) by a second actuator (46) that moves with the subbase under the operation of the first actuator (40). An enlongated support (36) preferably mounts the shuttle (42) for sliding movement under the impetus of the second actuator (46) between a withdrawn position adjacent the label magazines (26) and an inserted position where the labels received by the label carriers (44) are aligned with cavity sections (18) of the mold to deposit the labels upon operation of the first actuator (40). Both the first and second actuators (40) and (46) are preferably embodied by air cylinders whose extending and retracting movements respectively move the subbase (34) and the shuttle (42) to provide the in-mold labeling operation.

Abstract: An in-mold label dispenser (22) for a blow molding machine is disclosed as including a dispensing head (56) mounted for rectilinear movement along a first axis A between a label magazine (48) and an open mold (28) and having a label carrier (58) mounted on the dispensing head for rectilinear movement between retracted and extended positions along a second axis B transverse to the first axis A. A drive linkage (66) is driven by a first gear unit (72) to reciprocally move the dispensing head (56), while a second gear unit (106) rotatably drives elongated supports (92) which mount the dispensing head (56) for its rectilinear movement and drive cams (108) that move the label carriers (58).
