In an automatic draft control system for positioning a hitch, velocity feedback loop techniques are employed to control the rate of movement of the hitch. When the system is operating in an open loop position control mode, a switch mounted on a tractor fender enables an operator to manually control raising/lowering of the hitch for the purpose of attaching an implement. Hitch position is sensed and a microprocessor calculates the first derivative of the hitch position signal to determine actual hitch velocity. The actual velocity is subtracted from a desired velocity value to obtain a velocity error signal. The error signal is subjected to an integral control algorithm and the integrated value is used to energize raise or lower solenoids controlling a valve which raises or lowers the hitch. When the actual hitch velocity is equal to or greater than the desired hitch velocity, the integrated value is saved. When the next raise/lower sequence is initiated the integrator is reset to the saved value. This eliminates delays in starting hitch motion. The desired velocity value may be derived from the setting of a drop rate potentiometer in which case a drop rate value is added to the integrated error signal with the result being used to modify a hitch movement command that energizes the "lower" solenoid, thereby limiting the hitch drop rate when the system is operating in a closed loop position/draft control mode.

A thin film highly directional audible sound sensor is mounted within a rotatable feed roll of a forage harvester to detect the presence of stones and other hard foreign objects in a crop material being fed past the feed roll to a cutter mechanism. Air-borne sound waves produced by the impact of foreign objects on metal parts of the harvester are detected by the sensor which produces a signal for stopping the crop feed mechanism before the foreign objects reach the cutter mechanism. The sensor is mounted on a stationary support within the rotatable feed roll. Output signals from the sensor control a stop mechanism for the crop feed mechanism via conductors extending through a stationary support shaft for the feed roll, thereby avoiding the need to commutate output signals from the detector.

A loader having an engine operably startable in conjunction with the closing of an associated electrical circuit, hydraulically operated boom and bucket mechanisms controllable from the operator seat, and an interlock mechanism requiring a proper sequencing of seat and seat belt switches to enable operation of the engine and hydraulic system is disclosed wherein the electrical circuit is provided with a service override feature that permits the engine to be started without undergoing the proper sequencing of the seat and seat belt switches. Whenever the contrtoller electrical circuit is placed into the service override mode, the hydraulic system cannot be enabled. The service override switch is interconnected with the normal operation switch so that both switches cannot be closed at the same time.

A bale accumulator and optional caboose are controlled by a microprocessor-based control circuit associated with and controlling the baler which pulls the bale accumulator. The control circuit monitors bale switches actuated by the presence of bales on four tables, two switches indicating the position of a bale push bar, and three table switches indicating when individual ones of three of the tables are latched or released for dumping bales therefrom. An operator's panel provides a visual display of the status of the bale accumulator and includes switches which may be actuated by the operator. In response to the switches on the bale accumulator the control circuit controls the push bar to move bales from a center table onto a left or right table at the sides of the center table, or inhibits movement of the push bar so that a succeeding bale ejected from the baler pushes a bale on the center table onto a trailing fourth table. In response to actuation of a dump switch the control circuit determines which tables should be unlatched to dump a bale therefrom, and energizes a motor or motors to unlatch the tables as determined by the control circuit. All operations of the bale accumulator are automatic except for operator actuation of the dump switches.

Under the control of a microprocessor first and second motors alternately drive first and second ends of a shear bar for adjusting the position of the shear bar relative to cutter head. The shear bar is adjusted so that it is substantially parallel to the cutter head even though the cutter head and shear bar may not be parallel at the time the adjustment is initiated. A knock sensor is provided for sensing impacts between the cutter head and shear bar, the knock sensor output signal being converted to a digital value for controlling the adjusting sequence. A knocker is provided for inducing vibrations in the shear bar to thereby test the operability of the knock sensor and its output circuitry. The sensitivity of the adjustment system to the output of the knock sensor is set automatically before an adjustment sequence begins to account for variations in the knock sensor, its output circuitry, and "noise" vibrations induced in the shear bar by normal machine operation.
