In a digital VCR having a plurality of magnetic heads for recording digital video signals in slant tracks on a magnetic tape, a recording circuit divides a digital input video signal into data blocks and performs an orthogonal transformation, such as the discrete cosine transform, in order to compress the data. The resulting blocks of coefficient data are recorded so that all coefficient data of a given block are recorded together by one of the magnetic heads on a single track. In this way, propagation of errors caused by head clogging or drop-outs is prevented.

The pair of magnetic head chips (57, 58) are disposed in a stepped arrangement with respect to the direction of arrangement of tracks on a magnetic recording medium with a step (DA) substantially equal to the pitch (P) of tracks on the magnetic recording medium. The gap distance (GL) between the magnetic gaps of the magnetic head chips (57, 58) is shorter than the sum of the step (D) between adjacent tracks and the length (L) of interblock gap regions between video signal regions and audio signal regions arranged along the direction of the movement of the magnetic head. The magnetic head permits satisfactory audio signal after-recording and extended recording and reproducing of digital video signals on the magnetic recording medium even if the magnetic recording medium is a narrow magnetic tape of 8 mm or less in width.

The encoded picture data from the channel encoding circuit, the encoded audio data output from the audio signal encoding circuit, the additional control code and pilot signal data for tracking are recorded in skewed tracks traced on a magnetic tape by a magnetic head or heads mounted on a rotary drum, with each skewed track having pilot signal data recorded at least adjacent the end portion of the track at which the magnetic head enters into contract with such track, subdata recorded at the other end portion at which the magnetic head leaves the track, and the picture data and the audio data recorded at an intermediate portion of the track, so that both picture data and audio data can be reproduced with high quality while the subdata can be played back with relatively high accuracy.

The apparatus operates to continuously detect whether the phase of the playback clock approaches or recedes from a point in time at which the eye pattern of the input signal is at a maximum value by comparing a count value obtained from the comparison results of the reference level counts from a previous cycle with those of the current cycle. Then, the apparatus controls a playback clock delay circuit on the basis of these count values so than an optimal count value is continuously maintained, thus ensuring that the timing of the playback clock is maintained in synchronization with the maximum eye pattern interval of the input signal.

When the transmitted signal is received or reproduced, the identifying signal included with it is detected, and the received signal is descrambled with a pseudo-random signal corresponding to the detected identifying signal.
