摘要: A medical probe for the heating of soft tissue, such as collagen tissue, wherein the medical probe has an elongated body with a proximal and distal end, a heating source, an RF electrode. Optional components include a thermocouple, and an insulative sleeve. The probe's elongated body is preferably hollow and flexible. The RF electrode and the heating source are powered by independently controlled power sources and cooperate to maintain a constant and smooth temperature to the distal end of the RF electrode. The heating source may be a contained liquid, such as saline, or an electrothermal mass, such as a ferrite, a toroid, a resistive element, or the like. Current induced from the conductor to the heating source creates heat in the heating source. The thermocouple measures the temperature of the heating source and adjusts the power to the conductor to maintain the heating source's temperature.

摘要: This invention is an improved method and apparatus for tissue electrical impedance determination and electrical power control in a surgical device. In an embodiment of the invention an apparatus for controlling power delivery in an electro-surgical instrument is disclosed. The electro-surgical instrument includes a first channel and a second channel for delivery of energy to a surgical site. The apparatus includes: a switch, a measuring unit, a processor and a drive unit. The switch electrically isolates the second channel during a first measurement interval and the first channel during a second measurement interval. The measuring unit is coupled to the first and the second channel. The measurement unit measures a first power level of the first channel during a first measurement interval and a second power level of the second channel during a second measurement interval. The processor is coupled to the measuring unit and to the switch. The processor adjusts the first power level and the second power level to minimize a difference between a measured value of a control parameter and a target value of the control parameter. The drive unit is controlled by the processor. The drive unit delivers the adjusted first and second power levels to the surgical site via respectively the first channel and the second channel during a heating interval. In an alternate embodiment of the invention a method for controlling power delivery in an electro-surgical instrument is disclosed.

摘要: A photometer having a plurality of input fibers to its optical entrance, at least one of which is for transmission of calibration light and at least one of which is for transmission of sample light. The exit ends of these fibers are aligned into a linear array, thereby producing an effective entrance slit for the optical entrance of the photometer. The fiber(s) for calibration light are positioned at the center of the linear array to avoid miscalibration due to photometer astigmatism.

摘要: Apparatus and a method for providing measurements of the diffuse transmittance or reflectance of a sheet at a set of points arranged along a pattern line on the sheet. In accordance with the invention, the sheet, such as a photographic film, is moved with respect to a cylinder with a slot cut in its wall parallel to its central axis. A beam of radiation is swept parallel to the slot and into the cylinder after scanning along a line on the sheet. The inner wall surface of the cylinder is coated with a high reflectance material so that a fraction of the directly transmitted and scattered radiation in the cylinder enters one or more electronic radiation detectors coupled to the cylinder. The fraction of the radiation measured depends on the position along the slot of the radiation beam, and the data are corrected by dividing the measurement at each point by the measured radiation at that point when no object is in the beam. Several embodiments of the cylinder are disclosed.

摘要: An apparatus and method for use in performing ablation of organs and other tissues includes a radio frequency generator which provides a radio frequency signal to ablation electrodes. The power level of the radio frequency signal is determined based on the subject area of ablation. The radio frequency signal is coupled with the ablation electrodes through a transformation circuit. The transformation circuit includes a high impedance transformation circuit and a low impedance transformation circuit. The high or low impedance transformation circuit is selected based on the impedance of the ablation electrodes in contact with the subject tissue. Vacuum level, impedance level, resistance level, and time are measured during ablation. If these parameters exceed determinable limits the ablation procedure is terminated.

摘要: An improved biopsy needle assembly for efficient removal of multiple biopsy cores from a single needle penetration. The needle apparatus comprises an elongate assembly of paired sleeves with an open notch in the wall of the outer sleeve for engaging a tissue volume in the bore of that sleeve. An inner sleeve or blade member with a sharp blade edge is moveable from a retracted position to an extended position to both (i) excise the tissue volume, and (ii) function as valve means to alter the open notch between an open position and a closed position. The invention provides a looped inflow-outflow passageway system for using high-pressure fluid flows to push or expel the excised tissue from the bore in working end where the excised tissue is captured. The looped passageway system is coupled to a remote pressurization source.

摘要: A method is provided for stimulating nerve growth, especially for nerve regeneration after damage to the nerve. The method comprises: applying thermal energy to one or more nerve segments adjacent a damaged region of the nerve, such that nerve fibers from the treated adjacent segment are stimulated to grow and extend toward the damaged region. The method may be used to enhance mechanical stimulative effect at a terminus of a severed nerve or a region of nerve injured by crush or other physical forces. The method may also be used to treat nerve segments retrograde up the nerve fiber and to increase the response of the injured nerve to regrowth and extension rapidly. An apparatus for delivery of thermal energy to the distal terminus of the severed nerve or region is disclosed. Thermal conductive or electromagnetic energy is delivered through a probe having a handle and a shaft. An energy delivery portion of the probe is configured to apply thermal energy to the distal segments of the severed nerve to promote rapid and more extensive growth of the nerve cells.

摘要: A method and apparatus for treating tissue using an electrosurgical system. The system includes an electrosurgical system having an RF generator, a treatment electrode electrically coupled to the RF generator and positioned in contact with target tissue to be treated, and a spark gap switch positioned between the RF generator and the target tissue. The spark gap includes a threshold voltage and is configured to prevent conduction of current from the RF generator to the tissue until the voltage across the spark gap reaches the threshold voltage. The method includes the steps of using the RF generator to apply a voltage across the spark gap switch, the spark gap switch causing conduction of current from the RF generator to the target tissue once the voltage across the spark gap reaches the threshold voltage.
