    摘要: The invention provides a plate-shaped polarized light separation device that has a repetitive structure of polarized light separation film surfaces and reflective film surfaces arranged alternately at a fine pitch, along with a projection display apparatus that uses this polarized light separation device. In the process of manufacturing the polarized light separation device, first a glass block is formed by alternately pasting together plate glass with a polarized light separation film made up of a multi-layer thin film of inorganic material upon its surface and plate glass with a reflecting film upon its surface, and this glass block is cut obliquely to the pasted surfaces. A projection that is usable at the time of the positioning of the polarization beam splitter may be provided on at least one side of this plate-shaped block that is thus cut out. By providing a &lgr;/2 phase plate on portions of the light exit surface of this polarized light separation device, one obtains a polarized light separation device that takes light from a light source and emits it as a light flux having only one direction of polarization, either S-polarized light or P-polarized light. Such a polarized light separation device can be used in a projection display apparatus.

    摘要: Liquid crystal modulation elements are arranged so that light outgoing surfaces thereof face light incident surfaces of a color synthesizing prism. Transparent plates are bonded to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements. For this reason, adhesion of dust to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements can be prevented. Further, it is possible to prevent light reflection at the interface surface between the light outgoing surfaces and air due to the difference in refractive index therebetween. This allows a high-quality image to be projected without deteriorating the switching characteristic of the liquid crystal modulation elements while preventing dust from adhering to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements.

The red-reflecting film is continuously formed without separating at an intersection of the two reflecting films. The blue-reflecting film is, on the other hand, divided into two pieces by the red-reflecting film and an adhesive. It is preferable that that four columnar prisms are obtained from one block of sheet glass. This arrangement ensures an improvement in properties of a resulting light-selective prism.

    摘要: A projection-type display apparatus in accordance with the invention reduces the margin formed around the image forming range of the light valves, and forms a bright projected image. Emitted light from a light source lamp unit of a projection-type display apparatus illuminates liquid crystal light valves of each color via an integrator optical system. First and second lens plates of an integrator optical system that serves as a uniform illuminating optical system are disposed such that the attachment position thereof is capable of fine adjustment in a direction vertical to the optical axis. By performing fine adjustment of the attachment position of these, the forming position of the illumination range B can be adjusted to include the image forming range A of the liquid crystal light valves. Accordingly, there is no need to provide a wide margin around the image forming range A, taking shifting of the forming position of the illumination range B into consideration. Thus, efficient usage of the illumination light can be increased, thereby improving the brightness of the projected image.

    摘要: The invention provides a dichroic prism capable of reducing displacements of projection pixels of colors caused by chromatic aberration of magnification. A dichroic prism is formed in the shape of a quadrangular prism as a whole by joining four rectangular prisms together. A red reflecting dichroic plane and a blue reflecting dichroic plane intersect to form substantially an X shape along junction surfaces of the prisms. The red reflecting dichroic plane is convex-shaped by partly changing the thickness of an adhesive layer for connecting the rectangular prisms together. Accordingly, since a red beam can be guided to a projection optical system while being enlarged, it is possible to reduce a projection image of the red beam to be projected onto a projection plane via the projection optical system. This makes it possible to reduce relative displacements of projection pixels of color beams caused by chromatic aberration of magnification.

    摘要: A projection-type display apparatus in which the entry of light rays to the back side of liquid crystal light valves from dichroic prism that composes optical system light synthesizer is prevented. To this end, a projection display according to the present invention preferably includes a color synthesizer for combining colored and modulated light beams, comprising: a square column dichroic prism composed of four triangle prisms having equal refractive index together whose cross sections are right isosceles triangles such that three light valves are located adjacent to three exterior peripheral surfaces of dichroic prism to receive colored and modulated light beams therefrom and; a filter for absorbing light with a specified wavelength range, leaked from surface of dichroic prism at the opposite side of incident light surface and directed to liquid crystal light valve, the filter being located between liquid crystal light valves and surface of dichroic prism. As for construction of the dichroic prism itself, specifically, of the four aforementioned triangular prisms, the first triangular prism and the aforementioned third triangular prism are mutually affixed in a condition in which there is a first step difference in the vertical direction. The first exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed side of the first triangular prism. Similarly, the second triangular prism and the fourth triangular prism are attached to each other such that there is a second step difference on the same edge, and a second exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed surface of the second triangular prism. Further, the first and the third triangular prisms and the second and the fourth triangular prisms are attached, with a step difference between them, in such a way that the aforementioned first exposed side and the aforementioned second exposed side are located on the edges facing the same direction; and a third exposed surface that is orthogonal to the aforementioned first and second exposed surfaces is formed between the aforementioned first triangular prism and the aforementioned second triangular prism.

In a light control layer of a screen, a first angle region that determines a diffusion distribution of a reflected light is different according to the screen position in a control direction in which light diffusion control is performed. Accordingly, a diffusion distribution of image light emitted from a screen surface is adjusted to be tilted downward by an upper end and upward by a lower end according to the screen position. Thus, for example, a size of a diffused angle range is maintained to be 30°, and a direction in which the image light is diffusion-emitted corresponds to an assumed position of an observer. The projection image can be observed while maintaining brightness of an image and the observation distance can be adjusted to be short.
