A thermoplastic melting apparatus for melting and dispensing hot melted adhesive materials includes a melting tank having an output line coupled to the bottom thereof for discharging a melted hot melt adhesive from the melting tank. A plurality of finned heat exchanger units are each mounted to the melting tank in the bottom portion of the tank but spaced from the bottom of the tank to allow for a 360.degree. contact with the melted thermoplastic material being heated by the heat exchanger unit. Each of the finned heat exchanger units have an elongated center bore therein and a resistance heating element mounted in each elongated bore. Each of the plurality of finned heat exchanger units is mounted within the melting tank chamber by a press fit aligning the opening in the elongated center bore with an opening in a wall of the tank. A threaded bolt is threaded from outside the tank into the opening to the center bore of the center core of each heat exchanger unit. The mounting bolt has a passageway therethrough for connecting to the heating element within the finned heat exchanger unit. The plurality of finned heat exchanger units are each mounted parallel to each other. Each fin has a pair of angled sides, each angled side being connected to an angled side of an adjacent fin with a curved surface between the bases of the fins. Each fin also has a curved apex and is generally circular in shape.

A plurality of radial passages are provided which alternate between those which extend fully from the circumference of the plate to the center with those which extend only partially inwardly. A process and apparatus for melting and processing a high molecular weight elastomeric material for a gum base or chewing gum product is disclosed. The solid elastomeric material, which preferably is polyisobutylene, is heated and melted into a liquid material which is then transported to an extruder. The apparatus has a heated housing section which includes sets of heated plate members arranged in fan-type groupings. Heated diverter members are positioned beneath the sets of fan-type plates. A heated angled conduit section is positioned below the housing section and a heated storage section is attached to the angled conveyance section. A valve and pump system is used to discharge the liquid elastomeric material from the holding section to the gum base or chewing gum extruder. Accurate metering and feeding of the liquified elastomeric material to a continuous extrusion process is achieved.

One embodiment of the instant invention is a test structure (FIGS. 1, 7 and 8) for determining the effect of various process steps on a plurality of devices with regards to charge-induced damage, the test structure comprising: the plurality of devices (device 10 of FIG. 1 and devices of FIGS. 7 and 8), each of the devices includes a plurality of device levels and device structures; a plurality of antennas (antenna 11 of FIG. 1, antennas of FIGS. 7 and 8) for receiving charged particles emitted during a process step, each of the antennas connected to a corresponding portion of the plurality of devices and wherein the antenna and the corresponding portion of the plurality of devices has a perimeter ratio and an antenna ratio; and wherein the perimeter ratios and the antenna ratios are different for different portions of the plurality of antennas and their corresponding portion of the plurality of devices so that the effect of the various process steps with regards to charge-induced damage can be determined.

A system for supplying melted thermoplastic material to a dispenser comprises a hopper for storing solid thermoplastic material. The hopper has interior side walls and an outlet. A reservoir block is located below the hopper. The reservoir block includes a reservoir into which melted material may flow from the hopper. A manifold and pump assembly is connected to the reservoir block for receiving material from the reservoir and pumping the material to a dispenser. A heating grid at the outlet of the hopper heats and melts the solid thermoplastic material in the hopper. The grid comprises a block which is spaced from the interior sidewalls of the hopper. The grid is thus thermally isolated from the exterior of the system resulting in more efficient heating of the material.

Air convection paths are provided which control the flow of heated air from a plurality of heat sources, through the cabinet of the apparatus, eventually exhausting the heated air to atmosphere. Degradation of the performance of heat-sensitive components of the apparatus is avoided by the heat dissipating system provided by the present invention.

A process for foaming polyurethane reactive hot melt adhesive comprising the steps of:a) melting a reactive polyurethane adhesive containing 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of a 2,2'dimorpholinodiethyl ether or di(2,6-dimethylmorpholinodiethyl)ether catalyst in a heated reservoirb) pumping the adhesive from the heated into a heated reservoir recirculating foaming device;c) foaming the adhesive by injecting therein an effective amount of an anhydrous gas;d) discharging a portion of the foamed adhesive through an orifice onto a substrate to be bonded; ande) recirculating the remaining foamed adhesive back to the foaming device for discharge at a later time.
