摘要： A storage compartment for a vehicle has a storage compartment cover which is pivotably mounted toward two sides. The latter can be pivoted either toward one side or toward the other side. In order to design the storage compartment such that it can be operated as simply and conveniently as possible and is secure, provision is made for the storage compartment cover to have two locked axes of rotation in its closed position. After one axis of rotation is released, a driving device automatically pivots the storage compartment cover in a damped manner into an open position.

According to the invention, in the mounting position of the hinge assembly (1) the pivoting axis (P1-P1) of the lifting lever (7) and the balancing device (10) are positioned above an upper surface (4a) of the furniture element (3).

The present invention relates generally to a hinge mechanism that includes a first arm and a second arm that are pivotally connected to one another such that the arms can be moved relative to one another between a closed position and an open position. A damper is fitted into a cutout of the second arm such that the damper can engage with a length of teeth of the first arm when the hinge mechanism moves between the open and closed positions. Biasing means is fitted between hooks or bosses of the arms, and biases the first and second arms toward the open position.

A precompressed spring is supported at one end by the first hinge member and at its other end by a guide rod for the spring. The guide rod is axially displaceable and acts on the second hinge member. At its said one end, the spring is supported by means of a cradle member which can rock on a bearing edge provided on the first hinge member, brake shoes for acting on the guide rod being interposed between said one end of the spring and the cradle member.
