Elastic hinges known from prior art separate the monolithic structure (18) in a rotating structural part (21) and a fixed structural part (20), in which the elastic hinge allows rotation of said rotating structural part relative to said fixed structural part. The elastic hinge is formed by forming at least one first slot-like element into said monolithic structure,in which the or each first slot-like element (2) defines the elastic hinge and thereby at least one rotation axis of the elastic hinge. The main drawback of such elastic hinges known from the prior art is the low transversal stiffness compared to the axial stiffness,especially for low tilting stiffness about the rotation axis. In order to provide an elastic hinge with increased transversal stiffness at least one rod-like or plate-like element (27) is formed into said monolithic structure (18) by forming at least one second slot-like element (23) into said monolithic structure (18).

An improved design of positioning mechanism, mountable to an upright, allows smooth, readily accomplished adjustment of the angular, rotational and translational positions of a boom with respect to the upright. A hub is mounted to and rotatable with respect to a base. A friction plate between the base and the hub applies frictional forces that are established by the mechanism, by urging the hub and base together. A pressure sleeve partially contained in a matching opening in the hub controls the rotational and longitudinal movement of the boom with respect to the hub. The design of the frictional engagement surfaces allows adjustment of the resistance to movement of the boom in the angular, rotational and translational directions to extend smoothly and predictably from a condition of virtually no resistance to a completely locked and rigid condition.

A flexural pivot assembly which reduces the number of component parts to five and reduces the number of operations in the manufacturing process is disclosed. The component parts include two sleeves, one inner flexure, one outer flexure, and one slotted tubular core that may be coated with a suitable bonding material. The core has a slotted end and an unslotted end and includes two pairs of diametrically opposed flexure slots each having substantially the same length as a side of a flexure so that the interlocked flexures can slide into the slotted end of the tubular core until they abut an end of the flexure slots and, at the same time, be positioned flush with the slotted end. The core further includes a pair of diametrically opposed travel slots. During a method of manufacturing the flexural pivot assembly, after the flexures are inserted into the tubular core, the sleeves are slid over the core until one sleeve is located at the end of the flexure slots and the second sleeve is flush with the slotted end, thus leaving a small gap between the sleeves. The assembly is then heated until the bonding material bonds the components together. Alternatively, the assembly may be welded together. After bonding or welding, the unslotted section of the core is then cut off.
