Cryogenic energy storage systems, and particularly methods for capturing cold energy and re-using that captured cold energy, are disclosed. The systems allow cold thermal energy from the power recovery process of a cryogenic energy storage system to be captured effectively, to be stored, and to be effectively utilised. The captured cold energy could be reused in any co-located process, for example to enhance the efficiency of production of the cryogen, to enhance the efficiency of production of liquid natural gas, and/or to provide refrigeration. The systems are such that the cold energy can be stored at very low pressures, cold energy can be recovered from various components of the system, and/or cold energy can be stored in more than one thermal store.

A method of conditioning natural gas in preparation for storage, involves taking an existing stream of continuously flowing natural gas flowing through a gas line (12) on its way to end users and diverting a portion of the stream of continuously flowing natural gas to a storage facility through a storage diversion line (22). The pressure of the natural gas is lowered, as is the temperature by the Joule-Thompson effect. The natural gas is passed in a single pass through a series of heat exchangers (18, 28,30, 32) prior to resuming flow through the gas line (12) at the lowered pressure. The diverted natural gas is liquefied in preparation for storage by effecting a heat exchange with the natural gas.

An NGL recovery facility for separating ethane and heavier (C2+) components from a hydrocarbon-containing feed gas stream that utilizes a single, closed-loop mixed refrigerant cycle. The vapor and liquid portions of the feed gas stream are isenthalpically flashed and the resulting expanded streams are introduced into the NGL recovery column. Optionally, a second vapor stream can be flashed and then introduced into the recovery column at the same or lower separation stage than the flashed liquid stream. As a result, the NGL recovery facility can optimize C2+ recovery with compression costs.

A process for recovering ethane and heavier hydrocarbons from LNG and a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The LNG feed stream is divided into two portions. The first is supplied to a fractionation column as a first upper mid-column feed. The second portion is heated while condensing a portion of a column distillation stream, thereby producing a “lean” LNG stream and a reflux stream. The reflux stream is supplied as top column feed. The second portion of LNG feed is heated further and supplied to the column as a first lower mid-column feed. The gas stream is divided into two portions. The second is expanded, then both portions are cooled while vaporizing the lean LNG stream and heating another portion of the distillation stream. The colder first portion is supplied to the column as a second upper mid-column feed, and the second is supplied as a second lower mid-column feed.

The present invention provides a method and system for separating CO2 from a gas stream containing CO2. A gas stream having an initial pressure is compressed and subsequently cooled. The compressed and cooled gas stream has an increased pressure and reduced temperature at which the CO2 in the gas stream is at least partially converted to the liquid phase. The liquid phase is separated from the compressed and cooled gas stream, to provide a liquid phase stream and a gas phase stream, wherein the output pressure of the liquid phase stream is higher than the initial pressure of the gas stream.

The invention provides a process and apparatus for the separation of nitrogen from a gaseous feed comprising a mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen gas, the process comprising the steps of: (i) cooling and at least partially condensing the gaseous feed; (ii) feeding the cooled and at least partially condensed feed from step (i) to a first fractionation to produce an overhead vapour stream having an enriched nitrogen content and a condensed product having a reduced nitrogen content which is subjected to a second fractionation, which comprises reboil, at a lower pressure than the first fractionation; (iii) partially condensing the overhead vapour stream, and separating to provide a liquid stream, which is used to provide reflux to the first fractionation, and a separated vapour stream, which is condensed to provide reflux to the second fractionation; and (iv) sub-cooling the condensed product of the first fractionation and dividing the resulting sub-cooled product into at least two streams: a first stream being expanded and fed to the second fractionation, and a second stream being expanded and reheated in heat exchange with the separated vapour stream from step (ii) before being fed to the second fractionation; (v) removing a hydrocarbon product stream low in nitrogen from the second fractionation; and (vi) removing a nitrogen rich stream from the second fractionation.
