A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming an image from millimeter waves. A field of view scanned using two geometrically orthogonal, intersecting copolarized fan beams (110, 120) to receive millimeter wave radiation. The received millimeter wave radiation from said fan beams are then cross-correlated (250, 650). Also, a method and antenna (400, 610) for receiving millimeter wave radiation are disclosed. The antenna includes first and second fan beam antennas (410, 420) for receiving millimeter wave radiation and a filter (430, 440) for rotating polarization of incident millimeter wave radiation through 90 degrees received by the second fan beam antenna (410). The respective first and second beams (110, 120) intersect and are co-polarized and geometrically orthogonal to each other. Still further, a millimeter wave imaging system (600) and method are also disclosed, which utilise an antenna (610) for receiving millimeter wave radiation, process the received millimeter wave radiation from the antenna (610), and build up the image (682) using a filtered, cross-correlated signal.

A method and a system for transforming between one or more point type sources and a line source in a transmission line structure. A transmission line path controller is inserted between a first parallel-plate waveguide section and a second parallel-plate waveguide section. The transmission line path controller comprises a curved side to which one end of each waveguide is coupled. The transmission line path controller further comprises a waveguide slot, one side of which is a part of the curved side, coupling the waveguide ends that are coupled to the transmission line path controller. The ends of the waveguides that are not coupled to the transmission line path controller forms the point type source and the line source, respectively.

An antenna arrangement for a radar surveillance method for target locating having altitude acquisition provides that, for the purpose of level comparison, a plurality of overlapping lobes lying above one another are generated by a reflector rotating around a vertical axis together with a primary radiator row arranged essentially vertically. In employing a paraboloid of revolution as the reflector, a vertical primary radiator row is arranged around its focal point. Given more greatly deflected beams whose exciters are at a greater distance from the focal point, the gain in such an antenna decreases as the side lobes increase, limiting the elevation angle range. A single parabolic cylinder reflector generating a beam and focusing only in the horizontal plane is employed as the reflector, the individual radiators of a primary radiator row being arranged along its focal line. The horizontal extent of the primary radiators is so small and the vertical extent is so great that the desired bundling of the individual lobes lying one above another arises. The antenna arrangement according to the invention can be advantageously employed in an X-band radar having altitude acquisition.

A primary radar antenna has a secondary radar antenna or an IFF antenna integrated therewith. Excellent properties with respect to compactness, radiation and frequency dependency are achieved by providing a bilevel pillbox antenna having radiation deflection on a cylindrical parabolic reflector from one interplate space to another. The lower interplate space has, in proximity of the primary radar signal radiator, which is arranged with its radiation center in the focal line of the parabolic reflector, an additional feed for in-coupling of the IFF signal. The antenna is particularly suited as a combined primary and IFF radar antenna for smaller vehicles.

A metal-only flat metasurface antenna is described. The antenna includes a pillbox beamformer combined with a metasurface structure provided by an array of non-resonant subwavelength unit elements having opening sizes that are strictly smaller than half of the guided-mode wavelength. The pillbox beamformer includes bottom and top parallel plate waveguides (PWPs) forming respective bottom and top cavities for propagation of the guided-mode. Bottom, middle and top metal plates form the two PWPs. Arranged at one end of the bottom and top PWPs is a respective parabolic structure. An all-metal horn structure is centrally arranged at a second end of the bottom PWP opposite the parabolic structure. According to one aspect, the horn structure includes a single feed port arranged at a focal point of the parabolic structure. According to another aspect, the horn structure includes two feed ports arranged at an offset of the focal point.

A displaced feed antenna which has a spaced conducting plate construction that incorporates electronically selectable feed points with associated antenna beam positions, and which comprises (i) a set of one or more beamforming configurations composed of layered, interlinking spaced conducting plates and conducting boundaries that are separated by cavities containing dielectric material or free space; (ii) a set of one or more internal focusing devices for each beamforming configuration to route radio frequency energy to or from the displaced feed points in receive and transmit modes respectively; (iii) a linear or curved array of displaced feeds for each beamforming configuration for coupling radio frequency energy into, or from, the cavity between the plates; (iv) a selection device to allow definable overlapping regions of the focussing devices to be illuminated for each beamforming configuration; and (v) array elements for each beamforming configuration between spaced conducting plates to free space, allowing either single polarizations or dual polarization operation.
