The primary driver has first and second opposing ends and defines a longitudinal length therebetween. The first end of the primary driver is bearingly engaged with a reaction surface that is fixed relative to the housing. The second end of the primary driver longitudinally moves a bearing surface that partially defines a closed working chamber having a fixed quantity of an incompressible medium. An actuating rod extends through an orifice in the housing and has a first end projecting outwardly and a second end disposed within the working chamber. The cross sectional area of the orifice is less than the effective area of the bearing surface whereby the travel distance of the rod is amplified relative to the change in length of the primary driver.

An electro-mechanical transducer, which provides radial amplified multiple piston motion is formed from attached multiple lever arms and multiple electro-mechanical drivers. The piston motion is amplified by lever arms, which are attached to electro-mechanical drivers, such as piezoelectric or magnetostrictive drivers, which oscillate in a radial direction in unison with the applied voltage. A minimum of three pistons, three lever arms (or shells) and three drivers may be used. A preferred embodiment, uses four pistons, four lever arms (or shells) and four drivers. As a result of both the magnified motion of the lever arms (or shells) and the large acoustic radiating area of the multiple pistons, the transducer provides a means for a high-source level from a compact low-frequency broadband transducer.

The transducer is arranged to provide a force to the payload support portion in a second direction when actuated, the second direction substantially orthogonal to the first direction. An apparatus can have a smart material actuator, a support structure and at least one temperature compensating material insert, either externally mounted to the support structure, integrally formed with the support structure, or any combination thereof. The structure of the apparatus can be formed of various materials with different Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE). The apparatus can include a mechanically leveraged electrically stimulated smart material. The support structure and actuator can be susceptible to the effects of differences in thermal coefficients of expansion of the materials used in the construction. A method for dimensioning and placement of a compensating insert with respect to the support structure provides an accurate and cost effective compensating insert. Furthermore, a method of compensating for differences in the rate of thermal expansion in one or more elements of an actuator is included with the present invention.

The other end of one of the lever arms is connected to a fixed portion that supports the rear end of an actuator element, and the other end of the other lever arm is connected to a rigid connecting portion connected to the front end of the actuator element. The displacement force of the actuator element is transmitted to the lever arms through the connecting portion, and is further transmitted to a joint between the lever arms. The joint functions as an output displacing portion. A longitudinal deformation of the large axis enables a deformation of the small axis to be induced, designed to generate a movement at the interface with the load, the component of which movement along the small axis is amplified. At least one zone made of elastomer material is arranged at least substantially along the actuating axis to dampen deformations and increase the capacity of the actuator to resist external stresses.
