In a method for machining a workpiece, an end face gearing is created on the end face of the workpiece by hob peeling. The workpiece is rotated about the Z axis in relation to a coordinate system with X, Y and Z axes arranged perpendicularly to one another. During creation of the end face gearing, the feed direction of the hob peeling tool encloses with the axis of rotation of the hob peeling tool an angle which is greater than 0° and less than 35°. The hob peeling tool is arranged in the X-Z plane at an angle to the X axis which is greater than 0° and less than 20°.

A gear teeth generation method carried out on multi-axis machines, using a disk tool. The tool travels along the gear tooth where its motion along a gap adjacent to the gear tooth is synchronized with the roll motion performed by said multi-axis machine so that the pressure line is on the machining surface of the tool. The tool machines a bottom land surface of the tooth with its perimeter. Machining of the tooth flank starts with the tool positioned such that the pressure line is near a first edge of the tooth flank. Positions of the tool and the tooth are changed to cause the pressure line to move away from the first edge of the tooth flank. Machining is finished when the pressure line reaches the opposite edge of the tool flank. The pressure line is on the machining surface of the tool throughout every stage of machining.

The method includes producing the toothing by machining the drive shaft with a cylindrical milling cutter, wherein the cylindrical milling cutter engages with the drive shaft from a radial direction with respect to a longitudinal axis of the drive shaft; and positioning an axis of rotation of the cylindrical milling cutter cross-wise relative to the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft, wherein the axis of rotation of the cylindrical milling cutter is at an incline relative to the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft so that the axis of rotation and the longitudinal axis draw an angle of less than 90°.

A tool for producing crown wheels by means of a generating process comprises a disc which is rotatable about its axis, with machining elements which are provided on the periphery thereof and the cutting edges of which lie in the outer surface of a profile determining the shape of the teeth of a crown wheel to be produced with the tool, said profile extending essentially helically over the periphery of the disc. In each cross-section of the helical profile the outer contour (25) of the cross-section is at least of a part of the outer contour of the tooth profile of an imaginary gear wheel (23) with involute teeth and preferably straight lines connecting thereto, in such a way that in the case of each of the teeth (22) with a tooth tip and two tooth flanks bounded by the outer contour (25) of the cross-section the distance between each of the two tooth flanks and a line at right angles to the axis of rotation of the tool and passing through the tooth tip remains the same or increases from the tooth tip to the axis of rotation of the tool.
