A spiral pattern abrading tool applies a cross hatch pattern to a flat surface in a single pass rather than two passes as has been used in the past. The abrading tool comprising an abrading holder having a plurality of abrasion members flexibly mounted from pre-determined points on the holder. The points being arranged in a pattern with a series of arcs extending out from the center of the holder, the points spaced apart at pre-determined distances along the arcs such that rotation of the holder in either direction provides a spiral pattern of abrasion members. To apply the cross hatch pattern, the flat surface is rotated and the abrading tool rotated so that a spiral pattern is applied to the flat surface.

A machine for grinding the metering edge contours on edges of axially extending grooves of a power steering valve input-shaft by means of a cylindrical grinding wheel, the machine being constructed to hold and rotate the input-shaft and to increase and decrease cyclically the distance between the axis of the input-shaft and the grinding wheel several times during the revolution of the input-shaft to grind metering edge contours to produce symmetrical sets of clockwise and anticlockwise metering edge contours. The input-shaft is centrelessly supported by means of surfaces tangentially contacting the outside diameter of the input-shaft. Two such surfaces are axially displaced on either side of the ends of the grooves in the input-shaft and are arranged one on each side of the grinding wheel on that side of the input shaft adjacent the grinding wheel. Other of the support surfaces are arranged substantially at right angles to the first two support surfaces to constrain the input-shaft against motion in a direction parallel to the first two support surfaces. A pair of pressing members contacts the outside diameter of the input-shaft one each displayed axially on either side of the ends of the grooves and loaded so as to press the input-shaft in a direction generally towards the first two support surfaces.

A concrete cutting saw is provided for the cutting of grooves in the surface of wet concrete. The concrete saw generally comprises a motor driven rotating cutting blade mounted on a support structure. The concrete saw is supported during cutting by wheels, and has a skid plate with a slot through which the rotating cutting blade passes to cut the concrete. The cutting blade is mounted with a sound deadening blade housing and a number of shields and guards located about the skid plate. The skid plate is movably attached to the concrete saw and resiliently urged against the concrete during cutting so that it remains in contact with the surface of the concrete surrounding the cutting blade during cutting. The skid plate is constrained into a bowed configuration so that it is substantially flat during cutting. A variable speed transmission is drivingly connected to the wheels to propel the saw across the concrete during cutting. A sensor detects the relative position of the skid plate and the cutting blade to generate an electric signal which cooperates with the variable speed transmission to slow down the saw as it encounters hard aggregate, and to speed up the saw as it encounters soft concrete. A distance counter measures and displays the distance which the saw travels during cutting.
