A process for producing glass bottles with shoulders includes a preform preparation step and a finishing step, in which a compressed gas is blown and the preform is rotated by 180° between the preform mold and the finishing mould. Preform preparation is achieved by introducing a glass gob into the mold through an upper aperture; inserting a blowing sleeve into the glass gob, the end of the sleeve extending beyond the shoulders of the outline of the preform of the bottle, the sleeve being closed by a plunger element slidable within its interior; opening the cavity of the sleeve to disengage the plunger element; and blowing air through the sleeve, wherein the final finishing step is achieved in an open preform mold, the volume of the cavity of the finishing mold being greater than the volume of the cavity of the preform mold by 5-20%.

An improved and mechanically simplified blow head mechanism for blowing a parison and internally cooling the blown parison is disclosed which may be used with an I.S. machine to blow a parison to form a glass container and then internally cool the blown parison below the annealing point. The blow head mechanism has a cooling tube which supplies final blow and cooling air and which is raised or lowered by raising or lowering the blow head mechanism. The blow head mechanism supports a blow head with a pressurized cylinder which maintains the blow head in a position in engagement with the finish of a parison once initially lowered irrespective of the blow head mechanism being further lowered to lower the cooling tube into the blown parison.

A mold opening and closing mechanism includes an aligning mechanism which has a horizontal mounting plate including a number of vertical openings for the number of molds, that is supported by a pair of spaced vertical uprights secured to the section frame top surface. A plurality of aligning cylinders are located in the vertical openings in the horizontal mounting plate and move parallel with the mold holder motion. Each cylinder includes surfaces configured to mate with the clamping surfaces of the mold holders. The axis of one of the aligning cylinders is held but not clamped at the theoretical centerline so it can move to the actual centerline when the mold holders are located at the advanced clamped closed position. A position transducer is mounted parallel with the mold holder motion to sense movement of the axis of one of the aligning cylinders and a computer receiving positional data from the transducer compares the theoretical centerline with the actual centerline determined from the data and defines a displacement offset for the displacement program to align the mold holders to the theoretical centerline.

A self-lubricating ring assembly (10) for use in forming a finish portion (F) of a hollow formable glass parison (P), the neck ring assembly (10) having an opposed pair of part cylindrical metallic neck ring sections (22a, 22b) that can be opened and closed with respect to one another. The opening and closing of the neck ring sections is guided by a guide ring assembly (24) that is made up of a larger diameter flange member (26) and a smaller diameter hub member (28) that is coaxially and removably joined to the flange member (26). A peripheral portion of the flange member (26) is slidably received in a slot that is defined by opposed slot portions (30, 30b) of the neck ring sections (22a, 22b). The flange member (26) of the guide ring assembly (24) is formed of graphite, to eliminate the need for external lubrication of the neck ring assembly (10), and the hub member (28) is formed of a hardened metal alloy.
