Abstract: Methods and systems for producing mesophasic (between liquid and solid phases) carbon materials from plastic waste. The method and system includes a 2-stage pyrolysis reactor, including first and second pyrolysis stages where a carbon feedstock material is subjected to pyrolysis. The first pyrolysis stage may subject the carbon feedstock material to pyrolysis at a first temperature in a range of 500° C. to 700° C., and the second pyrolysis stage may operate at a second temperature in a range of 800° C. to 1000° C., providing secondary gas phase reactions (SGR). A residence time of the carbon feedstock material in the reactor may be no more than 10 seconds. After pyrolysis and SGR, a sparging and thermal treatment stage may convert pyrolysis tar products to an anisotropic pitch product suitable for use in production of carbon fiber or bulk graphite for use in fabrication of graphite electrodes.

Abstract: A method of processing MSW, either sorted or unsorted, which can be carried out through the use of canisters to hold the waste feedstock, and autoclaves specially designed to process the waste at suitable temperature and pressure combinations is disclosed. The final solid product is a mixture of carbon ash and non-combustible materials, such as, metals, drywall, etc., and syngas that has an enhanced BTU value, typically between about 300 to 700 BTU/ft3. The remainder solid material generally amounts to approximately 5% of the original MSW volume. This material can then be sorted for metals with the balance being sent to a landfill or other recycling processes depending on its composition.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining carbon fiber from carbon fiber waste (e.g., pre-preg and CFP waste). The method and apparatus selects, or is controlled to select, between using an oxygen free pyrolytic process to volatilize the epoxy resin or other matrix in which the fibers are held to liberate the fibers therefrom and, depending upon the type of pre-preg waste, using a reactor environment where the reactor atmosphere has about 1% to about 2% oxygen by volume. The reactor has a counterflow such that the carbon fibers are moved in one direction and the off gasses are moved in the opposite direction. A combination of steam at the reactor outlet and vacuum pressure at the reactor inlet create the counter flow.

Abstract: Reactor for recovery or recycling of hydrocarbon products from hydrocarbon-containing material by decomposing and gasifying the material in a reactor housing, comprising a gas/particle separator device arranged to separate solid particles accompanying the gas and to return these particles directly to the reactor housing in the opposite direction to axially flowing gasified hydrocarbon products, and/or comprising a rotor shaft with axially running channels which are in flow communication with a coolant, and/or comprising a radial play formed between the periphery of a rotor and the inside of the reactor housing and amounting to at least 3 cm and at most 6 cm.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the recovery of aliphatic hydrocarbons from a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock stream comprising aliphatic hydrocarbons, heteroatom containing polar components and optionally aromatic hydrocarbons, said process comprising the steps of: a) mixing the liquid hydrocarbon feedstock stream with a solvent resulting in a liquid mixture; b) cooling the liquid mixture obtained in step a) to a temperature in the range of from +5° C. to −30° C. to obtain wax crystals in the mixture; c) separating wax crystals from the cooled liquid mixture obtained in step b) to produce a wax comprising aliphatic hydrocarbons and a dewaxed liquid mixture comprising solvent, heteroatom containing polar components and optionally aromatic hydrocarbons; d) separating solvent from the liquid mixture obtained in step c) and optionally recycling the separated solvent to step a). Further, the present invention relates to a process for the recovery of aliphatic hydrocarbons from plastics, and to a process for steam cracking a hydrocarbon feed.

Abstract: There is described a microwave pyrolysis process for the depolymerization of plastic for the production of monomers, waxes and heavy oils including the steps of: a) steam purge of the plastic from about 0.5% to about 50% w/w of a catalyst, in a media; b) pyrolysis of the plastic and the catalyst in the media with a microwave (MW) for a time sufficient to allow generation of heat providing a thermal treatment between 300° C. and 650° C. through absorption of microwaves by the catalyst and the media. The catalyst includes a compound having a high dielectric loss at the frequency of the MW to absorb microwaves, transfer heat to the plastic and initiate a pyrolysis reaction.

Abstract: One variation for a method for converting tires into pelletized, recovered carbon black includes: shredding a set of tires into a volume of tire rubber segments, the set of tires selected from a group comprising an agricultural tire, a commercial vehicle tire, and a passenger tire; in a pyrolytic reactor, thermally depolymerizing the volume of tire rubber segments into a volume of carbonaceous material; comminuting the volume of carbonaceous material; removing from the volume of carbonaceous material agglomerates larger than the maximum agglomerate diameter; within a mixer, mixing the volume of carbonaceous material with a binding agent over a first interval, the mixer inducing formation of a set of pellets of a range of pellet diameters; drying the set of pellets within a dryer to a particular moisture content; and removing from the set of pellets a first subset of pellets larger than a maximum pellet size.
