The present invention is an improved electronic type sewing machine in which a microcomputer integrated circuit arrangement, such as a master/slave microprocessor configuration, is employed to effectuate stitch position coordinate servo control for both bight and feed through digitally closing the position servo control loop. The sewing machine includes actuator means for adjusting the transverse position of the needle bar means and the positional displacement of the feed means in response to control signals provided thereto and static memory means, such as a read-only-memory, for retrievably storing a plurality of different predetermined stitch patterns each having associated retrievably stored bight and feed data corresponding to predetermined positional coordinates of the needle bar and feed means for defining associated stitch position coordinates for the stitches comprising the stitch patterns. The microcomputer arrangement is connected to the actuator which it controls as well as to the static memory containing the requisite data. A transducer arrangement is connected between the actuator controlled and the digital input of the microcomputer for providing a digital input signal to the microcomputer representative of the actual position of the actuator. Where the master/slave microprocessor configuration is employed, the slave microprocessor is employed to close the position servo control loop and the master microprocessor is employed to process the stitch position coordinate data and provide the desired digital position input to the slave microprocessor for digital position error comparison with the actual digital position input.

A pulse motor rotation phase adjusting system for a sewing machine includes a pulse motor operative for positioning a needle of the sewing machine in accordance with the predetermined stitch coordinates of a selected pattern. The pulse motor is adapted to be set to one of the stepping rotation phases in dependence upon the predetermined combinations of the magnetic forces generated by the windings of the pulse motor. A light interrupting arrangement is provided in the system which is connected to the output shaft of the pulse motor and serves for detecting the respective rotation phases of the pulse motor within a range of the maximum needle swinging amplitude and to produce a signal corresponding to predetermined combination of the magnetic forces, which signal is read out by a control circuit operatively connected to the pulse motor to rotate and reset the same to its initial position in accordance with said predetermined stitch coordinates when the electric power is applied to the sewing machine.

Disclosed is an improvement in a sewing machine supplied with stepping motors for the generation of setting movements of the stitch forming elements. A mechanical stop is provided in order to permit the stepping motors to be calibrated against the stop and thus provide precise settings of the stitch forming elements. Protection against jamming is provided by the use of elastic members between the coupling arm and linkages such that the elastic members absorb external forces against which the stepping motor is to be protected in order to keep the calibration intact. Additionally disclosed is an apparatus for setting the stepping motor either in whole steps or in arbitrary intermediate steps which are actually between two discrete stable positions.

A magnetic encoder system of a sewing machine drive comprises a magnetic, magnetised disc with alternating north and south pole elements, which are used as incremental markings. The latter are designed as a full ring-incremental track, which extends around a circumference of the ferritic disc, and as an annular section incremental track, which is designed as an annular section on the ferritic disc. The result is a magnetic encoder system for a servomotor of a sewing machine.
