摘要: Using a carrier such as a test strip, toothpick, cotton swab, etc, to detect the presence of Narcotics or impurities in a beverage. Using this method of on the spot detection was conceived while trying to think of a way to prevent Date Rapes and assaults do to a nullmickeynull being slipped into an unattended beverage. Trying to prevent ingestion of the drug became the most logical solution to fight this type of crime.

摘要: A product shelf life monitoring system comprises a label substrate bearing upon a limited portion of its area an active indicator composition responsive to varying temperature over time to effect a visible change in color density or the like. The susceptibility of the indicator composition to similarly respond to incidence of vagrant ultraviolet light is ameliorated by application of an area of ultraviolet light absorbent composition in register above the indicator composition and extending at most only slightly beyond the periphery of the area of indicator composition. In this manner, the remaining area of the label is preserved for ultraviolet light responsive implementations, and only a minimal, economical amount of ultraviolet light absorbent composition is expended.

摘要: A hand-held device is provided for the self-determination of the dehydration state of a human engaged in activities causing dehydration and which might not be evident to such person. The device can be in the shape of a dipstick having one end thereof containing a chemical indicator which when contacted with a stream of urine will provide a color change corresponding to the specific gravity of the urine specimen and is indicative of the whether the person is dehydrated or not. The cap or cover or the dipstick itself contains a color chart for comparison with the color resulting from the reaction of the urine and the chemical indicator.

摘要: A casing for use as a test kit that employs crushable ampoules prefilled with chemical or biological reagents, comprising a molded casing having a distinct reaction chamber, and at least one distinct cell adapted for receiving a crushable ampoule. The cell has a flexible pressing area at its outer wall for pressing and crushing the ampoule. An opening exists between the chamber and the cell that is either narrow enough, or provided with filtering means so as to allow passage of the reagent while preventing passage of glass shards from the cell to the chamber. The casing further comprises an inlet leading from the exterior of the casing into the inner space of the reaction chamber and a sampling probe, for enabling obtaining samples of material and delivery of said material through the inlet to the reaction chamber.

摘要: A micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device is described having a membrane which can be induced to resonate and the frequency of its resonance can be monitored. Chemical moieties can be attached to the membrane, and these moieties can be selected such that they have an affinity for molecules of interest, especially biological molecules of interest. When molecules of interest bind to the moieties they increase the mass of the membrane and thereby change the frequency of the membrane's resonance. By monitoring the resonance one can obtain an indication of the presence of the molecules of interest and in some circumstances an indication of the approximate concentration of these molecules. In addition, several types of moieties having affinities for several different molecules of interest can be placed on the membrane in such a way that the sensor can detect the presence of several different types of molecules of interest and distinguish which ones may be present and which ones may be absent.

摘要: An apparatus for measuring the concentration of a target substance is provided. The apparatus includes a detection container, a pump, and an integral temperature indicator or integral temperature correction factor indicator. The detection container has or contains a detection material chemically reactive with the target substance to produce an observable indication upon exposure to the target substance and such that the concentration of the target substance detected is readable from the observable indication. The pump is engageable with the detection container and operable to draw a sample of a gaseous environment into the detection container, the drawn sample containing the target substance, such that the detection material is exposed to the target substance. As for the integral temperature correction factor indicator, it is particularly adapted to indicating the correction factor applicable to the concentration measurement at specific temperatures.

摘要: A semi-conductor wafer-based device that is used to suspend biological materials, such as lipid bilayers or single cells, for chemical, electrical and/or optical examination. The wafer has a t least one pore that extends therethrough. The pore is of sufficient size to suspend a lipid bilayer or a cell therein. The surface of the pore is coated with an insulating film to provide an insulating surface to which the lipid bilayer/cell is attached when the lipid bilayer/cell is suspended within the pore. The divice is used to measure the physical properties (e.g., voltage gating) of cells and lipid bilayers that contain biomolecules such as transmembrane proteins.
