摘要: Disclosed herein are fusion peptides comprising a fluorescent domain and a rare earth element detection domain capable of binding to a rare earth element and fluorescing when exposed to light when a rare earth element is bound and compositions thereof. The fusion peptide may further comprise a leader domain and a tail domain. The fusion peptide acts as a biosensor to detect and quantify rare earth elements. Methods for imaging internal body structures, detecting rare earth elements in a biosample or environmental sample, and cleaning an environmental site are also presented.

摘要: A sample collector for extracting a particulate material specimen from a container includes a needle for puncturing the container and capturing an amount of specimen inside a chamber in mechanical communication with the needle. A spring-loaded continuously and progressively retractable and extendable sheath protects the tip of the needle from inadvertent contact with a human user and encloses the puncture site on the container during collection. A preliminary screening test for illicit substances can be conducted on part of the collected specimen to determine whether the container should be confiscated. Part of the collected specimen can be preserved for later confirmatory testing.

摘要: The determination of hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity of contaminated water can be achieved by developing an external calibration model. The model can be prepared using standard solutions where scavenging capacities are determined, and then the solutions are treated with addition of an oxidant and a dye, followed by UV treatment to form hydroxyl radicals that are scavenged by species in the standard solution. The residual dye content can then be measured using absorbance. The absorbance and the scavenging capacity data for the standard solutions are used to build the model, which can then be implemented to determine scavenging capacity of contaminated water. Water samples can be subjected to the same treatment as the standard solutions, the absorbance of the water sample is then obtained, and then the model is used to determine the corresponding scavenging capacity. Determining scavenger capacity of contaminated water can aid in advanced oxidation processing (AOP).

摘要: A microfluidic device includes a first layer of a porous material with pores having a first average pore size and a liquid-receiving area through which a liquid sample is received into the microfluidic device. A second layer of another porous material, with pores of a second average pore size, is stacked below the first layer and has a channel with a starting end positioned at least in part in an overlapping manner with the liquid-receiving area. The channel has a terminating end extending laterally at a predetermined wicking distance from the starting end. The first average pore size and the second average pore size cause a wicking effect in which at least some of the liquid sample flows along the channel at least a portion of the wicking distance between the starting end and the terminating end.
