    Abstract: A light beam heating system is suited for use in performing local heating. The light beam heating system includes a light source for emitting light, an optical lens assembly for converging the light emitted from the light source on an object to be heated, and a gas cylinder for supplying shielding gas towards the object via a gas regulator, a gas valve, and a gas nozzle. During heating, the oxygen concentration of an atmosphere around the object is maintained to less than 5%. Preferably, the shielding gas is supplied to the object via a temperature regulator so that the shielding gas may be heated to a desired temperature prior to the heating of the object.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to improved centrifugal rotary electric furnaces which are used for the heating and or fusion of minerals, such as quartz, and other materials having a high melting point. The furnace includes a generally cylindrical furnace shell and a decreasing diameter stepped end member attached to each end of the shell which is intended to more closely conform the end of the furnace to the shape of fused ingot or melted charge formed inside the furnace, while still providing a sufficient depth of unmelted charge between the fused or melted material and the end member to insulate the end member from excessive heat and the warpage and other damage caused thereby.

    Abstract: A metal processing furnace of the indirect arc type employing opposed electrodes projected into an ionizable atmosphere is provided with novel filter-like, vapor nucleation means which enables the furnace to be utilized for numerous different metal melting/smelting operations in a manner which precludes the presence of metals and metal oxides in their vapor or particle forms in process effluent gases delivered from the furnace. The furnace achieves substantial operating advantages in the manufacture of ferroalloys, silicon and beryllium-copper metals, and comparable products including carbides such as silicon carbide.
