Abstract:
Disclosed herein are methods and apparatuses for adding thermal energy to a glass melt. Apparatuses for generating a thermal plasma disclosed herein comprise an electrode, a grounded electrode, a dielectric plasma confinement vessel extending between the two electrodes, and a magnetic field generator extending around the dielectric plasma confinement vessel. Also disclosed herein are methods for fining molten glass comprising generating a thermal plasma using the apparatuses disclosed herein and contacting the molten glass with the thermal plasma. Glass structures produced according to these methods are also disclosed herein.

A lightwave oven cooking method and apparatus using power and pulsed power applied to a plurality of high-power lamps which provide radiant energy in the electromagnetic spectrum and having wavelengths including the visible and near-visible ranges wherein irradiation is applied to the food by applying power to the lamps for a specified period of time without vaporizing all of the surface water on the food, and then applying reduced irradiation to the food to complete the cooking cycle without producing an overly browned surface which inhibits deep penetration of radiation in the near-visible and visible ranges. The reduced power can be at a reduced duty cycle which can be done in a sequence of one or more reducing steps in the duty cycle or a continuous reduction of the duty cycle of the power applied to the lamps. A change in water vapor concentration emitted from the surface can be sensed to reduce power.

A plasma torch has two or more tubular electrodes located co-axially with one inside the other for chemical treatment of a reactant and includes a lead-in tube supplying the reactant and which is located co-axially in the inner electrode; the lead-in tube includes a liquid-cooled tube provided with a heat-insulating layer on the outer surface; the lead-in tube has a longitudinal axis along which the lead-in tube can be moved for positioning the nozzle at its lower end in relation to the plasma flame; the nozzle end is replaceable and is shaped with a conical wall portion to define a venturi passage to increase the exit velocity of the reactant; between the lead-in tube and the inner electrode an annular passage is provided through which plasma-forming gas is introduced which can be used to cool the reactant gas.
