A tie ejector distributes new ties to be installed along a railway track, from a tie distribution car of a rail carried tie exchange vehicle. New ties are moved from a gondola cars to a conveyor at the rear of the tie distribution car leading to the tie ejector. The tie ejector has an endless drive chain on rotatable sprockets on a frame. Two striker plates are attached to the drive chain at opposite ends and opposite sides so that they cannot interfere. One is always on the rear when the other is on the front ejecting a tie by propelling it laterally relative to the conveyor. The trajectory of the tie is adjustable using a movable deflection shield attached to the frame, specifically to adjust the downward deflection angle. The tie ejector can be manually actuated by an operator while the tie distribution car is advanced, to drop ties next to the track at a predetermined and repeatable position relative to passing empty tie cribs.

A method and apparatus for changing railway sleepers is disclosed wherein lifting devices are spaced along a section of railway line to be repaired. The lifting devices simultaneously lift and separate the rails from the sleepers. Thereafter, a plough levels the ground on which new sleepers will be placed. Finally, new sleepers are inserted under the rails. The plough additionally serves to provide a foundation upon which the rails are supported, and should it be necessary, the plough can support the weight of a passing train.

A machine for renewing and laying a railway track comprises an elongated machine frame and undercarriages supporting the machine frame at the ends thereof. The undercarriages include at one of the machine ends an undercarriage which is vertically adjustable relative to the machine frame and detachable therefrom, the vertically adjustable undercarriage not being track-bound, and a track-bound undercarriage which is arranged adjacent the vertically adjustable undercarriage and is detachable from the machine frame. A first coupling detachably mounts the vertically adjustable undercarriage on the machine frame and a second coupling is provided at the track-bound undercarriage for mounting the vertically adjustable undercarriage on the machine frame. The machine also comprises a device for receiving old ties mounted on the machine frame, a device for laying new ties mounted on the machine frame, a vertically adjustable device for planing the ballast bed mounted on the machine frame between said devices, and guides mounted on the machine frame for guiding old and new rails.

A compact bidirectionally operative tie exchanging apparatus includes an extensible telescoping beam assembly carried in a support cradle mounted on the underside of a railway maintenance car. In a first embodiment, the beam assembly includes an inner and an outer beam telescopically received within one another with hydraulically actuated tie clamping arms mounted on the opposite, remote ends of the beams assembly. A push/pull hydraulic cylinder has its ram and its cylinder connected, respectively, to the inner and outer beams. Hydraulically actuated locking pins mounted on the support cradle are selectively actuatable to lock either the inner beam or the outer beam to its respective support cradle. When the inner beam is locked to its support cradle and the push/pull hydraulic cylinder actuated, the unlocked outer beam can be extended and retracted to remove and replace railway ties from one side of the rail bed and, when the outer beam is locked to its support cradle and the push/pull hydraulic cylinder actuated, the unlocked inner beam can be extended and retracted from the other side of the rail bed. In another embodiment, the tie exchanging apparatus is mounted on a turret to permit controlled rotation about the vertical axis. The rail tie exchanger is advantageously compact, simple to operate, and can be used with equal facility for removing rail ties from one side of a rail bed or the other.

A tie replacing system is adapted to replace worn ties in a railroad track of the type including longitudinally extending metal rails supported on wooden cross ties by metal tie plates and a gravel ballast roadbed supporting and at least partially enclosing the ties. The system includes a tie biter-tie plate holder assembly comprising a pair of opposed jaws each including a plurality of teeth positioned at spaced intervals across the entire width of a worn tie. Upon closure of the jaws, the teeth function to remove any portion of the worn tie which projects above the under surfaces of the tie plates. The jaws also include tie plate gripping members which engage the tie plates corresponding to the worn tie and thereby retain the tie plates in engagement with the under surfaces of the rails.
