    Abstract: An electronic transmitter includes: a generator circuit to generate a baseband signal; a modulator circuit to modulate a carrier signal with the baseband signal; an emitter to emit the modulated signal at an intended recipient; and a distortion circuit to apply a final distortion to the baseband signal or the modulated signal. The final distortion is optimized to minimize the ability of unintended recipients to localize the emitter using correlation-based techniques, and to minimize any degradation to the data rate of the emitted signal at the intended recipient. In some cases, the transmitter is part of an electronic communication system that also includes a receiver at the intended recipient. The receiver is aware of the final distortion and includes a collector to collect the emitted signal, and a demodulator circuit to demodulate the collected signal using the final distortion to recover the baseband signal.

    Abstract: A computer-implemented method of geolocating a target includes: receiving, from a plurality of sources, a corresponding plurality of angle estimates of the target relative to the respective sources; generating a corresponding plurality of planar renditions of the received angle estimates; selecting a combination of two or more planar renditions whose intersection defines a polygon; in response to multiple such combinations, selecting one having a largest number of planar renditions; and determining a center of the polygon of the selected combination. A computer-implemented method of evaluating geolocation geometry with respect to a target includes: geolocating the target from received sensor data of the target from multiple sources and location data of the sources; generating entries of a covariance matrix from the location data and the geolocation; deriving eigenvalues of the covariance matrix from the generated entries; and comparing the derived eigenvalues to evaluate the geolocation geometry with respect to the target.

    Abstract: A nonplanar metamaterial polarizer includes: a substrate including dielectric material transmissive to electromagnetic radiation and having a nonplanar shape; a first conductive pattern on a first side of the substrate; and a second conductive pattern on a second side of the substrate. The first and second conductive patterns are configured to alter the polarization of the electromagnetic radiation as it transmits through the substrate. In some cases, the first and second conductive patterns include split-ring resonators, and the nonplanar shape is a cylinder. An antenna system includes the nonplanar metamaterial polarizer and an antenna inside or adjacent to the nonplanar metamaterial polarizer and configured to transmit or receive the electromagnetic radiation through the nonplanar metamaterial polarizer while the nonplanar metamaterial polarizer alters the polarization of the transmitted or received electromagnetic radiation. In some cases, the antenna is a monopole antenna, a dipole antenna, a biconical antenna, or a discone antenna.

    High resolution inspection device for casting defects using IR imaging

    Abstract: A nondestructive system and method for high resolution thermal imaging in metal casting applications is provided to detect defects and starts with the article under test being subjected to a thermal gradient, followed by infrared images taken thereof. The creation of the thermal gradient results in any defects reacting differently to the thermal gradient application to accentuate the defect in the infrared image. The apparatus for conducting the tests in one embodiment includes a single channel sensor, remote cable, and a laptop controller with real time image processing software. This hardware provides high resolution, real-time viewable infrared (IR) images with a variable focus distance adjustable from six inches to infinity. The apparatus enables crisp, clear imagery of various metal casting defects.

    Abstract: A system and method for rank estimation of electromagnetic emitters is provided. One aspect of the disclosure provides creating a graph of angles of arrival (AoAs) versus range and using a polynomial curve fit against the graph to determine a rank estimation of electromagnetic emitters. Another aspect of the disclosure provides using a search over parameters of the multiple polynomial curve fits, for each hypothesized rank, to optimize the rank estimation results. This search may be a greedy search to improve speed of convergence. Another aspect of the disclosure provides a metric ‘score’ to select the highest probability rank (number of emitters) based on the agreement between the multiple polynomial curve fits and residual AoA errors.
