Abstract:
Embodiments of systems and methods for efficient broadcasting via random linear packet combining are described. A method for random linear packet combining includes receiving a plurality of data packets from a data source. Additionally, the method may include dividing the plurality of data packets into a plurality of data blocks, and multiplying bits associated with the plurality of data blocks by a set of coefficients to generate a plurality of product values. The method may also include generating an encoded data packet having a plurality of encoded data blocks, wherein generating the encoded data packet comprises linearly combining the plurality of product values for respective data blocks of each of the plurality of data packets into corresponding encoded data blocks of the encoded data packet. Because each encoded data packet includes information about a complete set of data packets, rather than just a subset, less broadcast redundancy may be required.
Abstract:
A system and methods are disclosed for serving combined media using resource metadata referencing original media data. Combined resource metadata is created from combining the metadata of two or more files for a virtual media file representing the requested combined media. The combined data can be adjusted to synch audio and video portions as needed for combining the files. The virtual media file references the original media files and serves the content on-the-fly, rather than creating a new file with the combined media, at a savings of server response time and memory consumption, while maintaining high performance.
Abstract:
Examples of achieving quality of service in a wireless local area network via meeting communication channel performance criteria to include a minimum signal-to-noise plus interference ratio and a proportional fairness limit are disclosed.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for servicing content for delivery to a client device are described. An item of content is identified during a session with the client device. A type of service to be performed on the item of content is identified. A provider is selected from a plurality of providers capable of performing the service. The session is transferred to the selected provider, which performs the service on the item of content.
Abstract:
Time-frequency coding in a multi-band ultra-wideband system is generally described. In this regard a hopping code agent is presented to select a frequency hopping code for encoding and decoding from a set of predetermined FHC's for communicating with other devices in a multi-band ultra-wideband (MB-UWB) network, wherein the FHC defines a sequence of two or more pulses over two or more frequencies and wherein the FHC's include a time slot that contains no transmission. Other embodiments are also disclosed and claimed.
Abstract:
A method and system for reducing the resolution of media data. Input data at a first resolution are received from a source. The input data are compressed. The input data can be downsampled to generate compressed downsampled data at a reduced resolution. The compressed downsampled data can be used to generate a frame at the reduced resolution. When the frame is needed as a reference for another frame, the compressed downsampled data can be decoded to generate decompressed downsampled data at the reduced resolution. The decompressed downsampled data can be upsampled to generate decompressed data at a resolution corresponding to the first resolution. Thus, a larger amount of data can be processed while the data are compressed. As such, data processing operations such as transcoding can be accomplished quickly and effectively while saving computing resources.
Abstract:
A method for performing a soft-handoff in a mobile streaming media system, and a method for performing a hard-handoff in a mobile streaming media system are is disclosed. In the soft-handoff embodiment, the present invention detects that a channel quality between a mobile client and a first base station remains above a drop threshold and that a channel quality between the mobile client and a second base station increases from below to above an add threshold. The present embodiment then sends a first multiple description bitstream from the first base station to the mobile client and sends a complementary second multiple description bitstream from the second base station to the mobile client. This method thereby provides improved utilization of wireless bandwidth during soft-handoffs, in contrast to conventional systems where the same bitstream is transmitted from each base station. In both the cases of soft-handoffs and hard-handoffs, when a mobile client enters a cell whose base station has no free capacity, the base station may prevent call dropping by reducing the number of descriptions being served to the existing clients and thereby providing capacity (at least one description) for the new client. These methods provide improved utilization of wireless bandwidth during soft-handoffs, and reduced probability of service disruption during both soft-handoffs and hard-handoffs.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention recite a method for enhancing the quality of visual prompts in and interactive media response system. In one embodiment, a video coder/decoder (codec) used by a thin device is determined. A visual prompt to be displayed on the thin device is accessed and the display parameters of the visual prompt are modified such that at least one character of the visual prompt is aligned with a blocking artifact generated by the video codec.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention recite a method and system for improving the fidelity of a dialog system. In one embodiment, a first input generated by a user of a first system operating in a first modality is accessed. In embodiments of the present invention, the first system also generates a first output corresponding to the first input. An second input from a second user, who is engaged in a conversation with the first user, is accessed by a second system. The second input is then utilized to modify the first output of the first system.
Abstract:
An implantable prosthesis for placement in hollow tubular organs is described alongwith an instrument for deploying the said prosthesis. On radial compaction, the prosthesis has a low profile, allowing introduction into the body with a deployment instrument of low calibre. The prosthesis has multiple longitudinal struts to provide longitudinal support. The prosthesis may be provided with helically configured members for circumferential support. The deployment instrument includes a retrievable tool to temporarily secure the prosthesis within the body during the implantation procedure.
