Abstract: A method of performing robotic surgery includes determining a distance between a first surgical instrument and a second surgical instrument in a surgical operative site, comparing the determined distance between the first and second surgical instruments with a threshold distance, generating an alert based on the comparison between the determined distance and the threshold distance, displaying a visual representation of the surgical operative site on a display, and displaying the alert overlaid on the displayed visual representation of the surgical operative site and in proximity to a visual representation of the first and/or second surgical instruments on the display.

Abstract: An endoscopic forceps includes an elongate shaft defining an instrument axis. An end effector includes first and second jaw members each supporting an opposed sealing surface for clamping tissue. At least one of the jaw members is movable relative to the instrument axis such that the jaw members are movable between a first spaced-apart configuration and a second closed configuration for grasping tissue. A cutting instrument includes a reciprocating blade translatable relative to the sealing surfaces to sever tissue clamped between the jaw members. The reciprocating blade contacts an undersurface of at least one of the jaw members when the jaw members are in the second configuration to define a gap distance between the sealing surfaces. A handle adjacent the proximal end of the elongate shaft is operable to induce motion in the jaw members, and an actuator is operable to selectively translate the reciprocating blade.

Abstract: A deployment and retraction mechanism for a surgical instrument includes a gear box defining a longitudinal slot, a slider, a ring gear, and a planet gear. The slider is configured to engage a deployable component of the surgical instrument and is translatable along the longitudinal slot between a proximal end, corresponding to a storage condition of the deployable component, and a distal end, corresponding to a use condition of the deployable component. The planet gear is operably engaged with the ring gear and configured to orbit within the ring gear. The planet gear includes an off-center pin rotatably supporting the slider thereon. The planet gear and ring gear are configured such that a one-half orbit of the planet gear within the ring gear translates the slider from one end of the longitudinal slot to the other end of the longitudinal slot.

Abstract: A robotic surgical instrument includes a housing, a support plate disposed within the housing, and a shaft having a proximal end portion coupled to the support plate within the housing, a proximal segment, a distal segment, and an articulating portion interconnecting the proximal and distal segments. An end effector assembly is coupled to the distal segment of the shaft. A plurality of actuation components extends through the support plate and at least a portion of the shaft to operably couple to at least one of the end effector assembly, the articulating portion, or the distal segment to enable selective actuation of the end effector assembly. A seal configuration establishes seals against an interior annular surface of the shaft, about each actuation component of the plurality of actuation components, and within the proximal end portion of the shaft to inhibit fluid communication from the shaft into the housing.

Abstract: An end effector assembly includes a clevis having first and second spaced-apart arms, a ceiling, a floor, pivot and cam pins extending between the arms, and first and second jaw members. Each jaw member includes a proximal portion and a distal body extending distally from the clevis. The proximal portion of the first jaw member includes a first flag disposed between the first and second arms of the clevis, operably coupled to both the pivot pin and the cam pin, extending vertically at least partially through openings defined within the ceiling and floor. The proximal portion of the second jaw member includes second and third flags disposed between the first and second arms of the clevis in spaced-apart relative to one another and between the ceiling and the floor. The second and third flags are fixedly engaged to the clevis.
