摘要: Methods of making an improved high performance x-ray system having a rotating anode therein which includes an improved target/tubular stem combination which, when combined with a rotor body assembly, reduces tube failure due to anode assembly imbalance and methods of bonding a metallic target and a metal tubular stem and connecting the combination to a rotor body assembly to provide a rotating x-ray tube target are disclosed. An insert of an alloy, for example, tantalum or its alloys, is placed between the target and the niobium-alloy tubular stem and then bonded thereto to produce the x-ray tube target/tubular stem assembly having a high remelt temperature and bond strength which, when connected, such as by bolting to the rotor body assembly, the resulting anode assembly retains proper balance during x-ray tube operations.

摘要: An improved molten metal spray forming atomization ring converter adapted for the spray forming of a refined molten metal from a molten metal refining or melting chamber wherein the molten metal is atomized into tiny molten droplets by gas impingement in a stream of molten metal and to the structure by which the molten metal droplets are preferentially directed to and deposited on a target surface. The molten metal spray forming atomization ring converter is adapted to control the flow of liquid metal droplets and to avoid a backflow of such droplets during the gas atomization by providing structure, such as small apertures to the inner diameter of the ring, by providing large holes through the inner diameter and adding a porous metal filter to cover the large holes or by providing a gas supply system independent from the atomization system gas supply, such that a pressure or diffused source of gas is provided at the inner bore. These modifications produce a relatively small mass flow of gas sufficient to feed the entrainment requirement of the high speed jets, but sufficiently low enough to avoid preatomization of the liquid metal wherein backsplash of the metal is reduced and/or prevented.

摘要: An improved high performance x-ray system having a rotating anode therein which includes an improved coating for the x-ray tube rotor. The surface of the x-ray tube rotor is coated with a ductile coating wherein at least about 40,000 x-ray scan-seconds are accomplished prior to tube failure due to spalling. The coating may be a ductile alloy such as Rene' 80 having a thickness of about 0.2 to about 5.0 mils thick and may be even thicker. The rotor coating has ductile properties with a strain to fail greater than 0.05% and thermal expansion properties which when placed on an x-ray tube rotor, provides at least about 40,000 x-ray scan-seconds prior to tube failure due to rotor spalling.

摘要: A method for the electroslag refining of metal is provided. The method involves providing a refining vessel to contain an electroslag refining layer floating on a layer of molten refined metal. An ingot of unrefined metal is lowered into the vessel into contact with the molten electroslag layer. A refining current is passed through the slag layer to the ingot to cause surface melting at the interface between the ingot and the electroslag layer. As the ingot is surface melted at its point of contact with the slag, droplets of the unrefined metal are formed and these droplets pass down through the slag and are collected in a body of molten refined metal beneath the slag. The refined metal is held within a cold hearth. At the bottom of the cold hearth, a cold finger orifice is provided to permit the withdrawal of refined metal from the cold hearth apparatus. The refined metal passes from the cold finger orifice as a stream and is processed into a sound metal structure having desired grain structure. A preferred method for forming such a structure is by spray forming.

The cladding is preferably an alloy having a niobium and titanium base according to the expression:Nb.sub.balance -Ti.sub.32-48 -Al.sub.8-16 -Cr.sub.2-12,provided that the sum (Al+Cr).ltoreq.22 a/o, and where Ti is less than 37 a/o the sum (Al+Cr).ltoreq.16a/o.The reinforcement may be in the form of plates, sheets or rods of the higher strength, higher temperature niobium based reinforcing alloy. The same crystal form is present in both the matrix and the reinforcement and is specifically body centered cubic crystal form.

摘要: An apparatus for solder joining metal tapes to form laminated metal tapes comprises an alignment box having a base and a sidewall means extending therefrom to define a tapered inner channel extending through the box. The tapered channel having an entrance end and narrowing to an exit end. At least one tapered wall extending from the base and within the inner channel to define subchannels that are spaced at the entrance end and converge into the inner channel before the exit end. The sidewall means and tapered wall extending from the base to respective wall tops, and a cover extending over the channel and subchannels is mounted on the wall tops. The base, sidewalls, inner wall, and cover being configured to form the channel and subchannels to have a first preselected distance between the base and cover that is greater than the width of the tapes. A second preselected distance between oppositely facing walls bordering the subchannels that is greater than the thickness of the tapes, and a third preselected distance between oppositely facing walls at the exit end that is greater than the thickness of the laminated tapes. A solder duct means mounted on the box for directing molten solder into the inner channel to flow from the exit end to the entrance end. The solder duct means having a slot extending therethrough and aligned with the exit end. A seal means mounted on the solder duct means adjacent the slot for minimizing solder escaping from the slot while solder coated tapes pass therefrom, and a wiper means mounted on the solder duct means and positioned from the seal means removes excess solder from tapes passing through the seal means.
