Abstract: One embodiment is directed to transmitting user data to a UE from a base station on a shared downlink channel and determining if a throughput for the user data transmitted to the UE on the shared downlink channel is greater than a threshold amount. If the throughput for the user data transmitted to the UE on the shared downlink channel is greater than the threshold amount, the base station provides the UE with a minimum amount of access to a shared uplink channel by making proactive grants of uplink resources when such UE is more in need of a proactive grant than other UEs. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed wirelessly communicating with user equipment (UE) operating using discontinuous reception (DRX). When a rank for the UE has changed is determined and, in response when that happens, if an ON duration for a current DRX cycle for the UE will elapse during a current subframe is determined. In response to making such determination about the ON duration, a dummy assignment of resource blocks on a downlink shared channel is sent to the UE. The UE extends the ON duration of the current DRX cycle in response to the dummy assignment. If a channel quality indication (CQI) report has been made by the UE is determined and, in response thereto, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) used for communicating with the UE is updated based on the reported rank and reported CQI. The dummy assignment is not made for communicating actual data to the UE.

Abstract: Among other things, a communication system comprising remote units, a reference timing source, a controller, a controller clock, and a remote unit clock. The remote units exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices. The reference timing source is synchronized with a coordinated universal time (UTC) or a Global Positioning System (GPS). The controller clock is synchronized with the reference timing source and provides timing information to the controller. The remote unit clock is synchronized with the controller clock and provides timing information to a remote unit. The controller and the remote unit are configured to transmit time stamp messages to synchronize the controller clock and the remote unit clock, by avoiding contention between time stamp transmissions and baseband data transmissions or between time stamp transmissions of different remote units to the controller.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a method of using variable-resolution quantization to front-haul at least some data over a front-haul network in a system configured to provide wireless service to user equipment. The method comprises, for each symbol position, determining a respective number of required resource blocks having respective actual user-equipment (UE) signal data to front-haul for each carrier and determining the number of high-resolution resource blocks that can be quantized at a higher resolution as a function of a difference between a nominal per-symbol-position front-haul link capacity and a link capacity needed to front-haul the required resource blocks for all of the carriers if quantized using a lower resolution. The method further comprises, for each symbol position, allocating the high-resolution resource blocks to each carrier and determining, for each carrier, which of the required resource blocks to quantize at the higher resolution. Other embodiments are disclosed.
