    摘要: A helmet blastometer for characterizing the direction, speed, magnitude, and duration of a blast event to determine the likelihood of blast-induced traumatic brain injury (biTBI). Time of arrival (TOA) gage sensors are mounted on a rigid outer shell of the helmet each producing a TOA signal in response to a fast rising blast induced positive pressure change above a predetermined threshold. A receiver analyzes the positive pressure changes from the gages to determine direction, speed, and magnitude of a blast. Other TOA gauge sensors can be used to produce a TOA signal in response to a negative pressure change below a predetermined threshold. The positive and negative pressure change TOA signals are used to determine blast duration. A second set of internal contact pressure sensors is connected to an inner liner of the helmet to detect contact pressure on a user's head to determine if biTBI has been sustained.

    摘要: An extendable wing system for a fluid-born body has a forward wing and an aft wing pivotably coupled together at a location outward of their wing roots. A linkage mechanism mounted on the body provides both pivoting of the wing roots about a pivot point and translation of the wing roots and their pivot points to extend the joined wings from a stowed position to a deployed position. Translation of the forward wing root pivot point allows the stowed wing system to occupy additional space toward the nose of the body, thereby allowing use of wings having a longer wingspan and greater aspect ratio. The linkage mechanism can also be used to incorporate flight control, such as roll and pitch control, directly into the wing system. In another embodiment, the wings can incorporate actuator elements on or within the wings to effect flight control by deformation of the wing structure.

    摘要: Tire recapping or retreading apparatus and method including the use of a tread mold with a plurality of mold segments. A tread mold loading machine is used to position the prepared tire carcass relative to the mold segments and to install the mold segments on the exterior of the tire carcass. The mold segments are retained in place on the exterior of the tire carcass by a tension band. Resilient elastic tension bands or pre-stressed metal tension springs hold the mold segments on the tire carcass after the mold segments have been released from the tread mold loading machine. The use of the tread mold loading machine and the mold segments eliminates distortion of the tire carcass during installation of the tread mold.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for conducting and imaging vertical flow tests through a sample of porous material on-line in a CT scanner, characterized by a sample of porous material, such as a core sample, having a vertical axis and a transversely extending horizontal axis defining a scan plane to be imaged by the CT scanner. The sample is of uniform transverse width in the scan plane and has top and bottom end surfaces and opposite transverse side surfaces. The invention is further characterized by opposite filler bodies, of a material having an X-ray attenuation characteristic similar to the X-ray attenuation characteristic of the sample, juxtaposed against the side surfaces of the sample, respectively. The filler bodies have inner surface adjacent the sample and outer side surfaces that are round in the scan plane for forming with the sample a round shape for scanning in the scan plane. Also provided are top and bottom end pieces in fluid communication with the top and bottom surfaces, respectively. The end pieces include flow passages for passage of fluids into and out of the sample at the top and bottom end surfaces thereof. Provision is also made for securing together the sample, filler bodies and end pieces.
