Abstract: A rotor assembly has a rotor including a plurality of laminations each defining a plurality of poles arranged such that values of a pair of angles corresponding to each of the poles and defined between a magnetic axis of the pole and respective interpolar axes adjacent thereto are different. The values of the pairs define a repeating sequence around the lamination. The angles opposite an axis of rotation of the rotor are equal.

Abstract: A method for printing a three-dimensional (3D) article is provided by the present disclosure. The method includes induction heating, by an induction head assembly, a magnetic material to form an alloy melt. The induction head assembly includes a nozzle and an induction heater that heats the magnetic material. The method further includes including the alloy melt from the nozzle onto a base, and tracing a predetermined pattern on the base with the alloy melt to form a three-dimensional article.

Abstract: A hybrid powertrain utilizes a motor with a permanent magnet rotor. The rotor is formed by inserting parallelepiped magnets into slots. To reduce the likelihood of demagnetization, the net magnetization of each magnet is oriented parallel to a sidewards surface of the magnet and not perpendicular to an outwards surface of the magnet. The magnets may be arranged in multiple rows. The magnets in each row may be perpendicular to a rotor radial or diagonal to a rotor diagonal.

Abstract: In at least one embodiment, a hybrid permanent magnet is disclosed. The magnet may include a plurality of anisotropic regions of a Nd—Fe—B alloy and a plurality of anisotropic regions of a MnBi alloy. The regions of Nd—Fe—B alloy and MnBi alloy may be substantially homogeneously mixed within the hybrid magnet. The regions of Nd—Fe—B and MnBi may have the same or a similar size. The magnet may be formed by homogeneously mixing anisotropic powders of MnBi and Nd—Fe—B, aligning the powder mixture in a magnetic field, and consolidating the powder mixture to form an anisotropic hybrid magnet. The hybrid magnet may have improved coercivity at elevated temperatures, while still maintaining high magnetization.

Abstract: An electric machine rotor includes a lamination configured to rotate about a central axis and a plurality of pairs of permanent magnets. Each pair of permanent magnets is arranged in a V-shaped pattern and affixed within the lamination to create a magnetic field for rotation of the lamination. The lamination also includes an outer periphery spanning circumferentially outside of the permanent magnets, wherein a mass-reduction cutout extends through the lamination nested within in a V-shape defined by the permanent magnets adjacent to an outer surface of the rotor. The lamination further includes a stress-reduction slot that extends through the outer periphery of the rotor.

Abstract: An internal permanent magnet machine has multiple rotor sections, each section having multiple rotor laminations. Permanent magnets are placed asymmetrically in lamination openings to attenuate oscillations in torque caused by harmonic components of magnetic flux. Asymmetry is achieved by placing adjacent permanent magnets or magnet sets on the rotor periphery with different rotor magnetic pole arc angles.

Abstract: A method includes depositing a layer of alloy particles including rare earth permanent magnet phase above a substrate, laser scanning the layer while cooling the substrate to melt the particles, selectively initiate crystal nucleation, and promote columnar grain growth in a same direction as an easy axis of the rare earth permanent magnet phase. The method also includes repeating the depositing and scanning to form bulk anisotropic rare earth alloy magnet with aligned columnar grains.
