The present invention has an object to provide a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator with the excellent productivity and reliability, which can obtain a favorable optical response characteristic even if a high frequency electric signal is applied to a signal electrode. To this end, the present optical modulator is configured such that, in a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator in which an optical waveguide and a coplanar electrode are formed on a surface of a substrate having an electro-optic effect, floating electrodes formed using a conducting material, are provided on side faces along parallel waveguides, among side faces substantially perpendicular to the surface of the substrate. Thus, even when a high frequency electric signal is applied to the signal electrode, a phenomenon is suppressed in which a particular frequency resonates within the substrate, and an occurrence of dip in a particular frequency is avoided.

An AOTF drive method for driving a plurality of AOTFs connected in tandem comprises: separating a plurality of RF signals in advance into a plurality of groups; batch-branching the RF signals of each group in accordance with the number of steps of the AOTFS; and batch-adjusting the phases of the individual branched RF signals. As a result, this makes it possible to reduce the number of phase shifters compared to the prior art while maintaining the effectiveness of suppressing beats in the AOTFs.

An object of the invention is to provide an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) that realizes filter characteristics where the wavelength characteristics in the vicinity of a selected center wavelength are smooth, and the bandwidth thereof is sufficiently narrow. To this end, an AOTF of the invention has a construction where a mode coupling section and a wavelength characteristic flattening section provided with an optical filter configuration for selecting an optical signal based on mode conversion using the acousto-optic effect, are respectively connected via a mode branching device. The mode coupling section mode converts an optical signal corresponding to a selected wavelength, and the wavelength characteristic flattening section again mode converts only the optical component of a part of the selected optical signal mode converted in the mode coupling section in the vicinity of a center wavelength thereof. The optical component that has not been subjected to second mode conversion in the wavelength characteristic flattening section is branched and output by a mode branching device connected to the output side of the wavelength characteristic flattening section, to thereby perform flattening of the wavelength characteristics of the selected optical signal in the vicinity of the center wavelength.

The optical waveguide device comprises an optical waveguide path formed inside a surface of an electro-optical substrate, a buffer layer formed on the optical waveguide path, and a driving electrode for impressing an electric field so as to change a refractive index of the optical waveguide path, wherein the buffer layer is made of a transparent dielectric or insulator of a mixture between silicon dioxide and an oxide of at least one element selected from the group consisting of the metal elements of the Groups III to VIII, Ib and IIb of the Periodic Table and semiconductor elements other than silicon, or a transparent dielectric or insulator of an oxide between silicon and at least one of the metal elements and semiconductor elements described above.
