An interactive conversational apparatus provides seamless uninterrupted conversational responsiveness to a variety of user inputs utilizing a storage media having a plurality of temporally related data storage tracks containing interactive conversational content. The conversational content and control code information are stored on tracks in a timed sequence for providing interactive pathways through the tracks dependent upon various user responses. A media player facilitates playback of the interactive conversational content. A control code reader reads the control code information and generates track selection information based upon the control codes. User-input buttons or keys receive responses from a user based upon the interactive conversational content. A track selector receives the track selection information and user-input responses, and accesses the tracks of the storage media in response to the user-input responses and the control code information for enabling the playback of the conversational content. The control codes include memory storage commands and memory switching commands, a switch-to-track command, a switch-to-track-in-memory command, an accumulation command, a command for storing in memory a response to a particular interrogatory, a command for switching to a particular track based upon the response to the interrogatory stored in the memory, start playback, stop playback, pause playback until a user-input response is received, a command to selectively operate the visual indicia of a particular switch in timed relation to interactive conversational content related to the particular switch, and a command to selectively flash the visual indicia of a particular switch.

The system of the present invention provides actual interactive choices to members of an audience in the form of three dimensional (3D) objects in space, and after each member of the audience reaches out at, points at, or looks at the 3D object of choice, the system responds and alters the audio and/or video feedback to each member. Specifically, a 3D video production is presented on a screen and at several points during the presentation a character or person, appearing on the screen, requests each user to respond to a question by physically selecting one of several possible 3D objects, the 3D objects appearing through the 3D effect to be floating directly in front of each user. The 3D answer options could be three 3D characters, for example. Selection of one of these objects is facilitated through a unique user interface unit, embodied in either a helmet, gun, or wand configuration. Each of these alternative user interface units allow the interactive selection to be made by physical gestures. The user interface unit is comprised of a detection device, a processor and associated circuitry, and attached headphones. Immediately upon making a selection, the user interface unit determines the choice made by the user, matches the choice with a distinct prerecorded audio feedback response, and presents to the user a distinct and individualized audio response. These personalized feedback responses are seamlessly communicated to each user through a set of headphones, and thus, amount to minimally perceived alterations from the common audio presentation. Interactive realism is enhanced through the preferred lip synching of the audio feedback response to the video character's mouth movements.

Two or more audio channels are synched to a common video channel, with the video being compatible will all audio channels. The interactive programming is transmitted via broadcast or cable TV and received (28) by VCR used as a tuner (12, 12a) or by a simplified TV head-end tuner (30), with the transmitted television signal having the audio channels either multiplexed into the video line or the existing audio channels. The received television signal is provided to a control module (14, 14a) which demultiplexes the signal (16, 16a) and ultimately combines the user selected audio signal with the video in an RF modulator (20) under computer control (18, 22, 24, 26) to provide the interactive display.

A movie changeover system (20,200,2004,400) capable of providing a real time decision tree movie presentation having a variable movie display content dependent on the viewing audience response to branching choices which occur during the course of the movie. A pair of movie projection devices (22, 24), each having an associated portion of a substantially continuous overall motion picture presentation therefrom, has stored thereon a projectable portion of the overall motion picture presentation content. A changeover shutter mechanism (26) is operatively associated with the pair of projectors (22, 24) for selectively projecting a movie display choice of one of the projectable portions from one of the pair of projectors (22, 24) in a real time continuous movie display presentation with the previous movie display portion in response to a changeover signal. Means for detecting and sampling the audience responses associated with each choice, such as a microphone (32, 34), is provided with the sampled responses corresponding to preferential signal levels. The sampled signal levels are processed (252, 252a, 254, 256, 258, 260, 262, 320f, 322, 324, 452, 416, 418, 36, 38, 264, 402 ) and subsequently compared (40, 266, 440) to determine which of the two levels is greater, with the resultant signal being provided (268, 274, 276, 478) to an output circuit (42, 278, 442) to which the changeover signal is provided. An audience trend preferential characteristics, depending on the manner in which the movie has been constructed, may be used to automatically generate (158, 270, 406, 408, 160, 162, 272, 276, 410, 412) a changeover signal to provide a preselected ending for the movie based on the previously indicated audience trend, or ending selection logic (424) may be employed to select an audience preferred ending.

Interactive programming may be provided by the system (26) of the present invention which can enable both manual and automatic selection of various interactive responses from simultaneously transmitted programming on different channels. In a cable television system (20), the channels used to transmit the interactive programming are the midband channels with the selected response being treated by the system converter (26) to convert the individually selected response to a common assigned television channel frequency for ultimate reception and display on the subscriber's television (24, 22). Automatic selection may then be accomplished by the provision of a selection signal from the logic network (48) to a local oscillator (52) which, in turn, generates a beat frequency to be mixed in a mixer (54) with the various midband channel frequencies to convert the selected midband channel frequency to the assigned television channel frequency. The selection signal is either manually selected as a result of the choice or selection manually input by the subscriber via a keyboard (50) or automatically generated as a result of the pulse count value accumulated in memory (64, 65, ) based on the weighted signal value of prior responses. Various band pass filters (36, 58, 60) and switches (34, 56) are employed to pass the appropriate signals in the interactive and conventional programming modes of the system (26).

A real time conversational verbal interactive toy apparatus capable of providing a conversational type response to an interrogatory message from a removably insertable magnetic storage medium which comprises a plurality of coextensive multipurpose audio tracks contained in a housing includes a multipurpose selection apparatus for directly selecting one of the tracks for reproducing the selected information stored thereon, such as a multiple choice response to the interrogatory message, an insertion security apparatus operatively associated with a receptacle therein for providing an insertion condition for the inserted received magnetic storage medium housing with respect to the receptacle, the storage medium housing having a playback authorization code disposed thereon, the insertion security apparatus comprising elements responsive to this code for providing the insertion condition therefrom, and a condition responsive network operatively associated with the insertion security apparatus for controllably enabling the provision of a secure selected multiple choice playback response from the storage medium. Each track stores information in reproducible segments which are spatially related in time along the tracks and related in content to the corresponding segments on the other coextensive tracks of the plurality for providing the real time conversational type response. The condition responsive network is responsive to the provision of the insertion condition for providing the enable condition to a playback head only when the provided insertion condition corresponds solely to the playback authorization code so that only media capable of providing the aforementioned type of response may be employed.
