摘要: A disc drive includes a base and a disc rotatably attached to the base. The disc has an inner diameter and an outer diameter and a plurality of tracks. Information is written on the plurality of tracks. The plurality of tracks are written at a variable track pitch. The tracks positioned near the outer diameter are wider in pitch than the tracks positioned near the inner diameter. The plurality of tracks further include a first group of tracks written at a first track pitch, and a second group of tracks written at a second track pitch. The track pitch of each of the first group and the second group of tracks is selected such that the percentage of track misregistration for each group will be substantially the same. This method provides a means to increase storage capacity for a predetermined track misregistration budget.

摘要: A method of and apparatus for generating a reader-to-writer offset for a head positioned over a track on a disc in a disc drive having a plurality of tracks is disclosed. A reader and a writer are mounted on the head in a non-overlapping manner with a gap between the reader and the writer, which is known as the reader-to-writer offset. A disc drive controller is operably connected to the reader and the writer. The disc drive controller determines the reader-to-writer offset of the head for each track by computing the difference between a first head position x1 and a second head position x2. The first head position x1 is an optimal head position for writing information on the track and the second head position x2 is a midpoint of an off-track capability (OTC) of the head. The OTC is a portion of a track pitch over which the reader is expected to read information that is free of an incorrigible bit error such that the writer-to-reader track misregistration (TMR) is minimized as the head is radially displaced the reader-to-writer offset to read information written on the track or to write information on the track.

摘要: A disc clamp made from a shape memory alloy is configured for tight fit between an upper ledge of a spindle hub and the upper surface of a disc when the disc clamp is in an austenitic phase. In a martensitic phase, the disc clamp is configured for easy assembly over the spindle hub. The disc of the present invention provides for uniform distribution of clamping forces on the disc, and avoids the need for threaded holes in the spindle hub.

摘要: An HDA includes a base, a disc stack coupled to a spindle rotatably attached to the base by a spindle shaft and spindle bearing. An actuator assembly is pivotally attached to the base at a pivot shaft. Attached to one end of the actuator assembly proximal the disc stack is one or more transducers for reading/writing information from/to the discs. A servo writer includes a controller for moving the actuator during the servo writing process. The controller moves the servo writer at the cage frequency of the spindle bearing to lessen the relative motion between the transducer head and the disc as the servo information is written to the disc. The controller also may be programmed to move the transducer at both the spindle rotation frequency and the cage frequency of the spindle bearing to lessen the relative motion between the transducer and the disc during the servo writing process.

摘要: A method and apparatus for compensating for errors in servo systems. An improved zero acceleration path (ZAP) correction technique is provided, wherein selected tracks of a data storage device are used for ZAP processing in order to reduce the overall time required to perform error compensation for a storage device. For a given selected track to be ZAPed, track profiles of adjoining tracks are used in addition to the track profile of the selected track as part of the ZAP correction determination for the selected track. Using adjacent track profiles as part of the ZAP correction determination assists in mitigating AC track squeeze issues that would otherwise occur when performing selective track ZAPing.
