摘要： In a flat discharge panel having a cathode adapted to perform a discharge in cooperation with an anode through a main discharge space, being applied with a discharge voltage, and adapted to perform another discharge in cooperation with an auxiliary anode through an auxiliary discharge space, being applied with an auxiliary discharge voltage, said cathode being connected in series to a resistor, a method of driving the flat discharge panel characterized in that a memory function or characteristics is imparted to a matrix panel consisting of the flat discharge panel by shifting the discharge from the auxiliary discharge space to the main discharge space through raising the voltage applied to the main discharge space while lowering the voltage applied to the auxiliary discharge space, and by shifting the discharge from the main discharge space to the auxiliary discharge space by raising the voltage applied to the auxiliary discharge space while lowering the voltage applied to the main discharge space.

摘要： In a display device for pictures, etc., adequate brightness of pictures to be displayed is provided by varying the luminous times of the luminous elements making up the a display panel. The luminous elements receive multiple-bit codes representing levels of brightness from signals to be displayed. A time corresponding to a field of television signals is divided into a plurality of sub-fields corresponding to the bits of a multiple-bit code. The plurality of sub-fields have lengths of time proportional to weights of the corresponding bits. The luminous elements have different levels of brightness in sub-fields corresponding to bits of a multiple-bit binary code. For each luminous element, the time interval from a light emission start time in a sub-field where the first light emission occurs in a time corresponding to a field of television signals till a light emission start time in a sub-field where the last light emission occurs in a time corresponding to the next field of television signals is made shorter than the critical fusion period of the perception characteristic of human eyes.

摘要： A flat discharge display panel has a transparent face plate made of an electrically insulating material, a base or substrate made of an electrically insulating material, an intermediate insulating plate interposed between the face plate and the base or substrate, a plurality of major discharge cells defined between the face plate and the intermediate insulating plate, a plurality of anodes each disposed in each of the major discharge cells, a plurality of auxiliary discharge cells defined between the intermediate insulating plate and the base or substrate, a plurality of cathodes each disposed in each of the auxiliary discharge cells, a plurality of of auxiliary anodes each disposed in each of the auxiliary discharge cells, the paired main and auxiliary discharge cells being intercommunicated through a through hole formed through the intermediate insulating plate, and the paired major and auxiliary discharge cells constituting a gas discharge cell, whereby the positive columns produced in each gas discharge cell as well as the discharge paths are in parallel with the face plate.
