A spacer of the present invention for use in an image display device, which has the spacer between a cathode substrate with a cold cathode electron emitting device formed thereon and an anode substrate with a phosphor formed thereon, comprises a phosphate glass having transition metal oxides as its main components, and a higher phosphate concentration layer at the spacer surface. A thickness of the higher phosphate concentration layer is suppressed to 0.5 μm or less. More preferably, the spacer has a water resistant conductive passivation layer formed on its surface. This suppresses the thickness of the higher phosphate concentration layer to a thinner level, so that the spacer is less likely to be charged thus reducing the deflection amount of electron beam. An image display device of the present invention using above spacer can apply a higher voltage to the anode substrate, thus increasing the image quality.

A color cathode ray tube includes an evacuated envelope having a panel portion with a phosphor screen formed on an inner surface thereof, a neck portion, and a funnel portion connecting the panel portion and the neck portion, and an electron gun housed in the neck portion. The electron gun has a cathode and a plurality of focus grid electrodes including grid electrodes for forming a multistage focus lens for focusing an electron beam emitted from the cathode. The cathode and the focus grid electrodes are fixed in predetermined axially spaced relationship by a pair of bead glass. The electron gun is provided with a voltage divider for producing at least one voltage other than a voltage supplied from outside the evacuated envelope, the voltage divider is made of at least one resistor and is fabricated as a separate element from the bead glass, and at least one of bead glass is provided with a recess for receiving the voltage divider in a surface thereof on a side thereof facing away from the cathode and the focus grid electrodes.

A novel electron gun for the color picture tube is disclosed, which comprises at least a cathode for emitting three electron beams in alignment and focusing electrodes for focusing the electron beams emitted from the cathode. The forcusing electrodes include first and second focusing electrodes for passing electron beams. The first focusing electrode includes a plurality of perpendicular plate electrodes arranged in such a manner as to sandwich the electron beams along the direction of arrangement thereof after being passed through the passage apertures and rim electrodes surrounding the perpendicular plate electrodes. The second focusing electrode includes a couple of horizontal plate electrodes arranged in such a manner as to hold the electron beams along the direction perpendicular to the direction of arrangement thereof after being passed through passage apertures and extending in opposed relationship with the perpendicular plate electrodes and rim electrodes along tht electron gun axis. The resolution of the peripheral parts of the display surface of the picture tube is thus improved and the assembly of the electron gun thereof is facilitated.

An electron gun for a color picture tube has beam generators for generating three electron beams and directing them toward the fluorescent screen along three paths which are parallel with each other on the same plane, and at least one pair of electrode surfaces each having three apertures centered with the three paths for forming independent main lenses so as to focus the electron beams on the fluorescent screen, the electrode surfaces being spaced apart from each other. Provided for the electrode surface are cylindrical shield members centered with the apertures and extending from the apertures in opposition to the opposing electrode surface. Outer ones of the cylindrical shield members have each an end surface inclined with respect to the center axis of the aperture so as to form inclined electric fields effective to converge the outer beams to one point to which the central beam converges.
