The information processing apparatus includes an antenna, a transmitter and a receiver both coupled to the antenna, and a control unit for controlling the transmitter. The control unit causes the transmitter to transmit a signal at a low transmission power and waits for reception by the receiver of a response signal from the separate device. When the specific information is detected in the response signal, the control unit causes the transmitter to transmit a signal at a high transmission power by raising the transmission power of the transmitter, to thereby enable information to be read from or written to the separate device.
