A lubricant for improving the durability and reliability of recording media used in hard drives is disclosed. The lubricant comprises a perfluoropolyether main chain with a first end attached to a hexa(trifluoromethylphenoxy) cyclotriphosphazene, a second end attached to a bonding enhancer for enhancing bonding between the lubricant and a carbon-containing layer. The bonding enhancer of the lubricant can contain multiple hydroxyl, amide groups, 2,3-dihydroxy-1-propoxyl, acetamide, methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and glycidyl ether. Some bonding enhancers such as methacrylate, methyl methacrylate or glycidyl ether, can be further activated with ultraviolet light.

A method and system for cleaning and/or burnishing an article. The article is operated on by a burnishing object having one more cutting edges and one or more heating surfaces. The article rotates relative to the burnishing head and the cutting edges remove asperities from the article. The heating surface can be activated and can optionally protrude from the burnishing head to further reduce roughness of the surface of the article as the article is rotating relative to the head. The cutting edges and heating surfaces can be configured in shape and size (i.e., geometry) to accommodate the article.

A disc storage system includes a rotating disc and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider which is supported by an armature. The armature is used to move the slider radially across the disc surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc surface of the transducer. The slider includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc surface. As the disc rotates, the air bearing surface causes the slider to “fly” over the disc surface. Pads are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system and texturing is provided to a landing zone region on the disc surface.

A disk drive system or information handling system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. An actuator assembly is movably attached to the base of the disk drive. The actuator assembly moves the load springs and attached slider and transducers to various radial positions on the disk. The slider is a block of material having a leading edge, a trailing edge, a first side rail, a second side rail, a leading tapered edge and a center island. The center island is positioned near the trailing edge and includes the read and write heads or transducer. Sliders have a backside surface and an air-bearing surface. The slider also has one or more pads positioned near the edges of the first rail, the second rail, and the leading tapered edge. The pads are positioned at least a selected distance from the trailing edge. The pads are also positioned such that they are unaligned in the sliding direction. The pads are also positioned so that they are unaligned in the sliding direction when the first side rail and the second side rail form an angle with respect to a tangent at the radial position on the disk. In other words, the pads are unaligned when the slider is skewed with respect to the disk. The pads are formed using photolithography techniques.

A perfluoropolyether lubricant topcoat having at least one end-group having an epoxide ring is applied to a magnetic recording medium. Post-lubing treatment, such as ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, of the perfluoropolyether lubricant topcoat initiates chemical bonding between the epoxide end-group and the medium surface. The lubricant of the present invention provides improved tribological performance over conventional lubricants.
