In a method of automatically milking animals, such as cows, use is made of teat cups, each of which is provided with a liner made of a flexible material, by means of which the teat space of a teat cup is separated from the pulsation space. During milking, a pulsating vacuum stimulating the milk yield is created in the pulsation space. When a teat cup is being connected to a teat, the pulsation space is kept at an approximately atmospheric pressure, while air is extracted from the teat space. Conversely, when a teat cup is being disconnected, in the pulsation space a vacuum is maintained and in the teat space the vacuum is neutralized.

In the case of teat rubbers consisting of a shaped tubular member, the outer side of which has formed thereon a holding rim for engaging the edge of a milking cup from above, it may very easily happen that the holding rim of the teat rubber breaks through when subjected to blows or knocks. The teat rubber will then be practically unfit for use. It is now suggested that a recess should be provided in such a teat rubber in the holding rim portion located opposite the milking cup edge portion facing outwards in the longitudinal direction, and that this recess has inserted therein a ring consisting of a material which is different from the material of the teat rubber.

An air inlet valve for admitting air to the milk drain conduit of a milking cup or collector piece includes a housing secured to the milking cup or collector piece, a diaphragm clamped within the housing, and a valve poppet secured to the diaphragm so as to project from one side thereof. The valve poppet cooperates with a valve seat to form a valve adapted to periodically open and close in response to a pulsator pressure action on the other side of the diaphragm. In its opened state, the valve permits atmospheric air to flow through a connecting conduit to the milk drain conduit such as the interior of a rubber teat cup. The connecting conduit opens through the valve seat surface. The valve poppet can be releasably secured to the diaphragm.

The valve comprises a housing connected to the outlet of a teat cup assembly. The housing includes a nipple formed in the bottom portion thereof for connection to a milk suction line. A closure for a teat cup with a resilient inner liner in the shape of a small disk with a centrally located bulge. A farmer who has to milk fewer than four teats on any cow because of injury to or disease in one of them can utilize the closure to adapt an automatic milking machine of the conventional type to harvest her milk. The disk is large enough to cover the opening in the teat cup liner otherwise provided for the reception of a teat so that the flow of air therethrough can be cut off when a vacuum is applied to the passageway which terminates in this opening. The bulge with its gently sloping, raised surface increases the area of contact between the disk and the lip of the liner to aid in sealing the disk to the cup under vacuum conditions and prevents the disk from slipping sideways. A magnet secured to the back side of the closure, opposite the bulge, facilitates storage.

An inflation for use in a teat cup assembly for automatic milking machines employing a vacuum milk line and a pulsating vacuum line is disclosed. The inflation comprises an elongate, tubular, body member having a novel mouth-forming diaphragm at one end thereof for engaging the teat of a cow to retain the teat cup assembly from falling off the teat at the end point of milking. The mouth-forming diaphragm is formed by bonding one end of a relatively short tubular mouth-forming member to one end of the body member, wherein the mouth-forming member has a maximum cross-sectional dimension smaller than the maximum cross-sectional dimension of the tubular body member. The end of the body member to which the mouth-forming member is attached is expanded over the outer circumference of an annular expansion ring which has a diameter substantially greater than the cross-sectional dimension of the unexpanded portion of the tubular body member, so that the end of the body member is held in an enlarged circular configuration and the end of the mouth-forming member which is bonded to the body member is expanded outwardly toward the perimeter of the expansion ring. The other end of the mouth-forming member extends inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of the body-forming member, thereby forming the mouth-forming diaphragm at the end of the body-forming member. The mouth-forming diaphragm has a central opening therein which has a diameter less than the maximum cross-sectional dimension of the unexpanded portion of the body-forming member. Preferably, the body member and the mouth-forming member are made of silicone rubber material, with the mouth-forming member having a circular cross-sectional shape.
